To me it reads more like self destructive behavior, self harm, proving to herself that she's always goinf to be cast aside and working to that goal. That's why Mitsumi still accepting her caused that reaction. She saw through the bullshit..

But Mitsumi didn't.
This whole chapter Mitsumi didn't understood why Yasaka was acting that way, but Yasaka still doesn't know Mitsumi enough to know Mitsumi doesn't react like most people would. If Mitsumi understood Yasaka she could think about something she could do or say, but because she has not idea why she is acting that way Mitsumi puts this for later. Is because she doesn't understand that she doesn't let Yasaka go away.

By the way, my "bet" is that it'll Ujiie that will "fix" Yasaka before Mitsumi reaches any conclusions.

it’s a drawing… be normal

It's normal to exist diverse opinions about a fictional story.

Story plot aside, I really liked how the students went around the tourist attractions in Kyoto. Reminds me of when I recently visited and all the fun I had. Seeing the sceneries I recognize being Takamatsu'd, makes me really excited.

Without dipping into the evil/ebil debate...

I'm really glad that her character got fleshed out in this chapter, and sending me all topsy turvy about how I feel. I don't see a clean resolution or "fix" here (this series never deals in absolutes), but I do see an evolution of her character opening some cracks in her shell. Maybe enough that she'll be able to see the love that's offered her freely.

Oh Mako-chan, may your appetite never diminish :win:

I'm so caught between relating to her and hating her. There's kind of a lot of overlap between her character and the character of Kikuo's Aishite Aishite Aishite (Love Me Love Me Love Me). Starved for genuine love as a kid and now desperate to be able to control and create and harvest overwhelming and "special" love from others.

Maybe trying to create a reliable supply of love (both by creating intense loyalty so people won't leave her, and just by having the ability to create love as needed in the first place so she can always create more followers/praisers as needed) because of the unreliable supply of love experienced as a kid.

Maybe doesn't see herself as genuinely loveable (because her kid self didn't receive it) so she sees it as important to be able to create "love" out of thin air (through performance/manipulation) because that's all the love she can get.

I relate and it's something I struggle with.

I think the significance of the last scene of this chapter is that she's treated as being worth-caring-about even if she's not What People Want Her To Be. So she's treated as being worth caring about as herself, without being treated as exceptional or as having to be exceptional. So she feels a mix of embarrassment (at being seen for herself and considered worthy of care even though she doesn't see herself that way?) and reluctant but natural happiness and catharsis (at receiving what she actually wanted even though she doesn't know how to ask for it and doesn't think she deserves it).

I think.

edit: I edited in "or as having to be exceptional" in the above paragraph, and wanna add that in my childhood experience there was a definite dynamic of "love is conditional and you have to be exceptional to get it". You have to meet the specific expectations placed on you. You have to satisfy what's wanted from you. Then you get to have some love as a treat. I think that's the dynamic that exists in her head too, so she goes into every interaction trying to be What The Person Wants so she can score some "love".

Again Mitsumi embodies the soul of the dumb shonen protagonist in a shoujo, she isnt a blank slate for the audience but a very real character on her own that lacks the inhibitions that come with social norms in the city, when she sees someone in a bad situation she acts, appareances be damned.
Im not going to say Yasaka is evil, but she is knowingly engaging in behavior that harms others for her own selfish amusement, the powerlessness of her life gets quieted when she excerts her influence over others, its malice, but evil is too far of a stretch considering the consequences, yet all her interactions have been marked by people trying to get something out of her.
Which is why Mitzu´s naked and selfless approach is going to fucking demolish her, Mitzu doesnt win anything in their interaction, she just wins the feeling of doing whats right, and Yasaka probably has never had an interaction that did not carry an ulterior motive behind it.
Ujie is still a bitch, a beta and a cuck and I hope Yasaka puts him through the fucking meat grinder so that he realizes that he thinks he knows everything but really knows shit.

ALSO SHIMA MY PRECIOUS BOI, DO NOT LOSE HEART, YOU ARE ON THE RIGHT PATH, THE PATH MADE OF PRINCIPLE, OF INTEGRITY... THE PATH THAT LEADS TO CHARACTER AND COURAGE, STICK TO IT... ITS GONNA MAKE YOU PROUD I PROMISE YOU.

All these virulently negative responses to Yasaka are really missing the point of this entire series...
It feels like a large part of the people reading really only care about doting on and squeeing over the two leads and any character that has some kind of negative flaw is viewed ambivalently for interrupting the fluff. Unless it's Shima brooding because then he's a troubled and vulnerable hunk. But I think that speaks to a larger problem with manga readers in general where now it seems like all they want are "comfy good vibes" that are like cotton candy: sweet and fluffy but ultimately empty and unfilling.

Yasaka seems to be a complex character, I'm not sure what's her problem.
She reminds me a bit of Nadeko from Monogatari.
She uses her cuteness to her advantage, which would not be wrong if she was not hurting people.
Although the big difference with Nadeko is that Yasaka has apparently not received a lot of love.
I think she wants to be loved for who she is and not for her cuteness... something like that?

I think it's interesting that just like early Mika, Yasaka isn't explicitly lying. She's definitely knows how to manipulate people by being cute. But she's right she hasn't explicitly told any of these guys that she's interested in them. Even when she said the thing about being loved to Mitsumi as a bit of an insult. It still wasn't wrong and it helped Mitsumi out in thinking about how other's struggle with something that comes as easy as breathing to her.

But also just like Shima, Yasaka doesn't realize how she might care more about others than she thinks. She already won her self inflicted mental game against Ujiie. He clearly likes her. But just how Shima didn't have to tell Mitsumi that Ujiie was practicing volleyball alone. Yasaka didn't have to initiate conversation with him last chapter either. It clearly made him feel better and less alone. It could still be interpreted as her trying to get the attention she's clearly deprived, but it looked to me like her trying to be "nice."

Oh god an emotionally disregulated high schooler expressing their emotional needs in unhealthy ways… the horror 😱

but fr tho I can see why it might be frustrating why she hasn’t had much blowback for her behavior, but honestly that feels pretty real to me. As long as people are superficially pleasant and their wrongdoings are vague, it’s easy to get away with things. I’m excited to see her grow into a better person.
