so i went back to the first chapter, and it turns out there's a bit of a different translation. on the train, when Shima say's "It's just the entrance ceremony, it's no big deal", iwakura actually says "maybe to you", which is essentially the same as "i'm sure that's how you see it".

basically, it comes across the same way as when she said that when they just met, which he ends up regretting.
