From a human standpoint, Berger is lost and manipulated by ideology but not abnormal, while Jelly is almost disturbingly kind to the point she's mistaken as the zealous cleric she should be.

The premise is shining this chapter: Jelly's mellow attitude was made for this. Metaphorically or theologically. A conflict-avoidant slime with buffs is more saintly and friendly than most anyone else could be after multiple attempts to kill them and their friends.

I wish more fantasy had personality this clear and thematic. It's like proper fairy tale logic but proud of how absurd it is. Oh goddess... This is a similar approach fantasy as Shrek.
good post. I can only think of maybe two others that also have this very clear unambiguous thesis embodied in a heroic persona, Parashoppers ("even a single piece of straw has potential") and the one with Rudy the Blacksmith ("a poor workman deserves a better tool" maybe?). I would also call Popeye another good example, which makes me wonder if this thematic personality style has gone out of fashion but then come back in the form of goofy nostalgia? If so I hope we get more like it.

edit: with Jelly as the monster representing the Goddess among humans, and Berger as the human opposing the clergy embedded among monsters, I have the feeling we're being set up for an interesting irony. for instance: the barrier/boundary keeping out monsters - what if this is just a more specific instance of Berger's general control over monsters? in that case, both of them have already been blessed by the Goddess, and neither have realized it. they're agents of change with respects to the corrupt sainthood(?), Jelly from the inside and Berger from without, both implicitly with the idea that association with monsters ought not to be feared

He's acting like because he has the ability to tame monsters, he lacks basic human functionality.

Flip flop friends are not friends.

Why do they portray him thinking he did nothing wrong as him being insane? There really was nothing wrong with what he did.

Also casts some light on what would happen to Jelly, should people find out...
I think his expression is supposed to convey him being hypnotized by the butler rather than him being insane

Did that kid just throw a rock at him?

I am actually against child abuse, but man, I really, really want to whoop his ass.

Thank you for the update!

if you get hit first it's all fair game 8D; or y'know, indirect revenge like fucking/killing his parents /shot

thanks for the chapter

Young berger is handsome

What ungrateful friends.

That has been a concern, yes. Mostly due to meaning no more cookies.
Do not worry.

Bro can literally control monsters and he lived on the edge of poverty? That sounds like a colossal skill issue, I can't imagine him going hungry for even one day if he can just use some random monsters to hunt for some food or a bit of loot to sell...

The problem is he didn't want to use his skill, because it had to be a secret. Even if he went out solo, any time he uses it he still risks someone being in the area and noticing. There are relatively safe ways to use it still though.

If recurring orders work, he could have gotten away safely with telling them once to drop loot at a location daily and he just fetches that.

Otherwise, if he can control when his skill his active or not (whether his speaking is actually orders), he could easily pretend to have the ability to scare monsters away with his voice, which when they accuse him of controlling, he gives an example of them not listening to other commands (since he doesn't use the skill for those other commands)

They aren’t portraying him as insane, they’re portraying him as an easy mark.

If he knew Jelly's a slime he could control her. :thonk:

she's already got a human body so it might not work? then again he did 'wipe' the og jelly's memories...idk how much it'd work versus Slime-chan exiting the body versus still puppeting the saint and using magic/strength

yes
"The kindest most benevolent creature I have ever laid eyes on... is a monster! Kill it!"

It has seemed like Jelly's extreme fear of being discovered is just a silly misunderstanding on her part now that she's proven herself, but perhaps that's not the case.
Yeah now we know her fears were actually completelly realistic because the humans on this kingdom are american fucking stupid.

If Berger is a monster tamer I wonder how he managed to wipe old Jelly's memories. At first he looked like an op dark magician and got nerfed after that.

Well i doubt he used 'taming magic' to erase the memories (b/c a tamer wouldn't necessarily need to wipe a monsters memory unless it talked and to just prevent it from incriminating another person) so connecting with jellys body at that time was prolly some skill/technique/item he got from his cult/organization
