These guys don't really fit in. At least the threat they seemingly pose. There are mages hundreds if not thousands years of age and these guys (or with similar martial provess) never been utilized against any of these mages? Since they are apperently scared shitless and pretty easy to kill as the old fart demonstrated last chapter. No mage would live past 30 with them around.

Also for someone who is so detacted from worldly affairs after the subjugation, its fairly easy to drag Frieren in to any sort of plan for some reason.
They do, the point is that mages arent unkillable gods and need protection from warriors when fighting since their spellcasting needs some time to activate and this extends to even mages like Frieren, one of the reasons this series is good is because she isnt written like some Isekai protagnoist that effortless defeat anything they come across, Frieren and her group certainly have weakness not only in personality but also in their chosen professions.

Also this seem entirely limited to the Empire own borders, likely because if they desployed Shadow Warriors in other nations and they were found, it would spark a war were we dont even know why the list even exists, its possible the Empire simply wanted to eliminate any mage that could pose a threat to then and that list was just known mages that were possible threats to the Empire as this series been more nuanced that the typical power fantasy slop I dont think its something as basic as "the Empire is evil" and such rot.

if you cant grasp then you should've attended your english class more
It's not about understanding the words or not. I understood every word they use easily. But they were distracting from the story because of how uncommon those words are, and how these characters have never talked like this in the previous 125 chapters. It also makes them all sounds like a young person who found out about a thesaurus for the first time and are using it to try desperately to impress people. Normal people don't talk like this, especially not Stark, nor has he before. So when suddenly they do it makes the attention, which should be on the story itself, gets taken by the weird TL instead, and the chapter is the lesser for it.

Using big words doesn't make you smart or cultured, it just makes you pretentious most of the time.

Damn, translator is practicing for his English exams

Viz : No need to force him, okay?
Kirei : You need not coerce him

Viz : She looks so sad
Kirei : She seems markedly crestfallen

Viz : I'll do my best to keep my distance from now on...
Kirei : I shall refrain from further proximity then...

Viz : I was kidding
Kirei : We clearly act in jest

Viz : I must freshen up, at least.
Kirei : Hence, I must at least attend to my appearance

Viz : I am honored, you excellency
Kirei : Most gratuitous words

If you actually attended English class, you'd realize this verbosity does not make sense in many of the dialogues. There needs to be nuance, consistency and context. Frieren and Stark talking to each other so formally makes no sense. Sentences like "I desire to be more intimate about Four-Eyes" shows that the translator was too busy trying to pop out fancier wording than proofreading themself.

For example, last chapter's last dialogue, Kirei translation, words from Stark :
- This ain't some path people can cross

An example of a reasonable attempt at a more formal language :
- This route is truly unsuitable for travel

A Kirei thesaurus translation :
- The endeavor to traverse such an unpropitious passage shan't be conceivable for unexceptional personages

Just last week I was thinking, "I wish Ubel and Sense would reappear again" Now we get both of them in a single arc! Then you throw Land back into the story on top of that and I'm over the moon right now!

That or demons.
Wouldn't surprise me that much, if the empire had some hidden demon enclave within it. Especially considering that the first thing Macht and Solitär aimed at was breaking the barrier around the Empire after being freed.
On that note, Himmel and cia. supposedly killed Grausam at some point but that's just what we were told, we never saw a flashback of their fight (unlike with Böse, the other Sage of Destruction they killed).

During the Goddess's Monument Arc it was foreshadowed that he may have survived and at the end of that arc it was implied that he obtained Future Frieren's memories as he originally planned. He shared that knowledge with Solitär, who later broke the Great Barrier and freed Macht.

For someone like him, infiltrating The Empire would be a piece of cake.

Dunno why everyone is talking about the translation when this is kind of how it's always been tbh - but was it always this heavy-handed? Maybe?

My only gripe is that half the sentences seem to end in a 'hm?' 'huh?' or some question (though that's probably how it's written in the raws)

thanks as always for the TL!!

The first half was very disappointing.
Land just talking and telling everything non stop.
Too expository, not cleverness in the dialogues and his interactions with Ubel.

I've read enough romcoms to know how this works out.
Frieren actually crosses over with high school rom-com tropes quite a bit if you really think about it. Starting from a goofy teenager and his female friend who is constantly angry with him due to social misunderstandings. And ending with "these two girls" with the chemistry of an old married couple or a cool older brother who constantly fantasizes about Oneesans.

Finally, a good and realistic depiction of actual mage.

Extremely Strong in range but weak againts physical foes in close range.
Unlike "mage" nowadays that perfect in everyways and even shit on warrior in physical fights.

Heroes or Braves/Yuusha usually has high speed and overall good stats, but lower strength and defense than the warrior. Overall the best playable character. Think Cloud from Final Fantasy VII and Chrono from Chrono Trigger.
Yeah. The classic MC are usually balanced build, while their party members deal with the specialist jobs (but also more stereotyped and can be one-trick-pony).

Only bit later on we got extreme stats joke-MC who just crush through all resistance with one trick.
Even the OP protagonist these days tend to be all-rounder so the author can more freely use and adjust them to handle more variation of situation.

Seriously though, I am now getting more eager on what power criteria for being a Hero is.
Speaking of power, Yuusha typically can also have special blessing from the goddess/spirits or the likes in the scenario. The power gives them more resistance and advantage against the dark/evil attributes. And in scenario events, it can be the secret key that allow them to overcome the trials on their journey (such as inspiration, guidance, or just ability to snap out of enemy’s trick) while everyone else who are not the “chosen one” won’t be able to do it.
Kind of like how in saintess stories, they have blessing power that can do large scale spells like purifying corruptions or healing.

There are also version of story where they can use both physical and magical attack, again, making them an all-rounder build.
