It happens, though this day and age, it's much more rare. Things like that only turn out well in cultures where wholesome moral codes are strictly enforced.

Speaking as an American, I learned that in 19th and 20th century Appalachia, if was common for people to meet at their school or their church as kids. Even in cities.

My parents knew each other as kids, often attending parties together. My Dad's a very quiet guy, but he saved my Mom from falling into a bad crowd when they were in high school.
