went back and reread a little to get a gist and from what I can gather Caroline lost a succession battle and instead of waiting for probable execution decided to flee borders and "lived off the land"(pillaged) to grab some extra supplies before crossing the border. correct me if I'm wrong. This is just to refresh me on what's going on.

Not gonna lie, I'd think after confirming their survival, they'd rush to reconvene with Polidro to make sure he's not dead or grievously injured, and that he succeeded in killing the enemy commander, then hold a victory cheer. I'm at least assuming they know he's near enemy border.

At least for this princess's forces it kinda makes sense that they would celebrate now. Her subordinates are mostly cast off losers aside from Polidoro so like being incompetent to this degree doesn't seem like a stretch.

True enough. That said, I can't say for sure that they're cast off losers for celebrating early or if they're celebrating because they're cast off losers. Either way, a hard fight was won for them.

Presumably that’s Catherine’s head wrapped up to be taken as proof of slaying her, that’s why the bottom part is bloody.

I also agree that the action scenes can be a bit…. unique.
