When even the insecure chubby girl lowkey disses you by implying you have no friends to gossip with, you know you are the biggest loser in the school.

Seriously the more I read this manga, the more I come to realize that there is no chemistry between Yamada and Ichikawa. Yeah Ichikawa has a crush on Yamada, however Yamada doesn't seem to view Ichikawa as more than an acquaintance. Their relationship is of one of convenience, Yamada only spends time with Ichikawa when she has no one else with her and she's not busy/dealing with her own issues. I'm not saying that Yamada has to prioritize Ichikawa over everyone else, nor am I saying she has to actively pursue him, however I feel like there should be more to the relationship than Yamada only using Ichikawa as a means of killing time or having him do favors for her (like riding on his bike, taking his poncho to get snacks for herself, or having him get her out of trouble with the teacher), that is if the author is intending on having the relationship between Yamada and Ichikawa more than barely acquaintances.

This wouldn't be an issue if it wasn't for that romance tag. A tag I feel, at this point does not fit this story since the only romance, not relating to the side characters, is in Ichikawa's head.

Maybe there will be a moment in a later chapter where it all "clicks" and there's actually something substantial between the two characters. However, as of now, I am having a hard time believing that there is anything between Yamada and Ichikawa beyond being sort of friends with Ichikawa having a suppressed one sided crush.

...okay, I’m pretty damn sure Yamada and Ichikawa’s done at least two of the three things that she stated that she would like to do with a boyfriend. I get the feeling that she likes him but kind of hasn’t realized it yet. Either that or she’s just going about expressing it in her own way. I could never tell. Just like with that whole umbrella scene. Coincidentally she wanted him to reach for her pocket to get something - all while wearing his jacket and using her arms to shield him from the rain.

TL;DR There's little to no substantial evidence (so far in the story) that Yamada sees Ichikawa as more than just a friend. It would be fine if the manga didn't carry the misleading "Romance" tag. I still like the manga.

Ok, how is it obvious that Yamada likes Ichikawa?

Yamada shares her snacks with Ichikawa, acts friendly towards him, and asks him about his personal life? She does that with all her friends. This chapter has Yamada doing that with Hara-san. In fact she's more touchy-feely with them than she is with Ichikawa. Don't say "She's just too shy to go that far with Ichikawa." because you know Yamada's not shy. Self conscious, at times, perhaps, but that's not the same as shy.

Yamada blushes around Ichikawa. Again Yamada also does that around her circle of friends. How is it different when she acts similarly around Ichikawa?

Yamada wanted to wear Ichikawa's poncho that one chapter. No she thought she forgot her umbrella and wanted to use Ichikawa's poncho to get herself snacks. You could say "She only lied about forgetting her umbrella" however she has been shown to be an air-head of sorts, so it's not outside the realm of possibility that she forgot that she left her umbrella in her backpack. Yamada didn't seem to worry about "getting caught" when she told Ichikawa to look in her backpack for her wallet.

Yamada appeared worried when she thought Ichikawa was on a date with the girl that turned out to be his sister. This is the only moment that could be interpreted as Yamada liking Ichikawa. There's even the moment where it appeared that she wanted to talk with him at the front counter of the restaurant. However it turned out that she mainly wanted to get some ice-cream, which is consistent with her affinity towards snacks. Plus considering how Yamada acts in the rest of the manga this one moment is not enough to suggest she has a romantic interest in Ichikawa. Isolate the moment, and you get a girl jealous that a boy she likes is on a date with someone else. Take the rest of the story and how Yamada acts in the other chapters into consideration, and you get a girl who is simply curious as to what the boy she sometimes socializes with is doing with this mystery girl.

Look, I am not trying to pick a fight with anyone or say that you are wrong for interpreting the story so far differently from how I interpret it. I still like the manga. Plus, it's not like I'm against Yamada and Ichikawa becoming an item. I actually would like to see how Ichikawa and Yamada would act as boyfriend/girlfriend as well as how the supporting cast would react to that (considering that Ichikawa is seen as the antisocial outcast while Yamada is the most popular student).

However, given what we have seen so far, there's not a lot to suggest that Yamada wants to be Ichikawa's girlfriend. In fact, there's more evidence to suggest that Yamada just wants to be friends with Ichikawa, given that she doesn't really treat him any different from her friends, in my opinion.

Like I said before, perhaps the latter chapters will either show that Yamada does like Ichikawa in a romantic sense or develop her interest in Ichikawa, and when that happens I wont have any issues. But as of now, I'm just saying that for a manga that is tagged as a romance, there doesn't seem to be any actual romance in said manga.

Yamada has been interested in him/liked him since he left tissues for her, and in fact a little before that. She keeps looking at him and trying to interact with him, even if she has to lie to do it (as in the McDonald's chapter).

It's fine to have an opinion, but that opinion is wrong.
