Actually, Masha knows from the start (which is why she's taken aback when they're reintroduced and he feigns not having any Russian knowledge), since she knows he actually learned Russian back in the day specifically to help teach her a passable level of skill in Japanese.

Are the Japanese particularly vulnerable to challenges? I mean, when she said all that crap and then did the debate challenge, I'd be like "Run along, kid. You don't get to decide any of that stuff. You don't want her to be president, vote against her, and we see how many people agree with you. And no, I'm not going to do what you want just because you're making a scene. Shoo!"

True. Perhaps I'm not remembering as clearly as I thought, I could've sworn she had said something along the lines of how, at the time, he wasn't who she thought he was when he pretended not to know what she had said
