isn't that grounds for breaking ties to that nation and closing borders with them? or do they require their financial backing? Is that why they can get away with that shit?

Those land locked nobles are privileged assholes.
The one thing I don't agree with the MCs on is that they make it a big deal that they only use the money they earn themselves.
Nothing wrong with that but there is nothing wrong with using the money provided by the country either because they are doing their purification duties for the country.

@stunfire hasn't been that long since they had jobs, jobs they were so proud of, they weren't willing to give them up for love matters. They prefer to earn their own way in life.

@lovelyluna In the WN,
Maki and Chiharu were already starting to rebel against their restricted freedom of movement (esp. the escorting and guarding) even if they were treated very well. They want to actually go out by themselves and see the world as is without any coddling; their meeting the a-hole highlanders merely strengthened their resolve.

Maybe the saints said that because they feel that they were doing nothing. Comparing with people from waste management industries from their previous world, they basically doing nothing. No battling miasma-affected monsters, no exploring risky dungeons, the miasma itself is not poisonous for them (autorecycled into precious gems)

well, if you "righteous and perfect" humans don't want the saints around, maybe they should stay as far away as possible...and when y'all are dying from the accumulated miasma and stuff, then they can stay away still and we'll see how worthless they are to you then

Ok so your world will fucking PERISH without the saints, and yet you treat them like shit? Are you kidding me? Is this a joke.

There's always some asshole that spits on the value of things regardless of how important they actually are, isn't there?
It's funny how they took "You don't have to pay us" to mean that they don't need the saints instead of the other way around.

Unfortunately, when it comes to incompetent royalty, there's no way to really punish them without hurting a lot of innocent people in the process. At least they were properly verbally crushed. I don't even have much to say about the idiots since they covered it pretty solidly.

Them earning their keep isn't really a big deal for me since, as mentioned, this is mostly a fair compensation for irreversibly ripping them from their worlds and homes, but hey, whatever they want to take pride in.

I don’t need to hear how “saints have it easy” and how “they have everything handed down to them” from two princes. If those were peasants/people who actually work, I’d understand, but this? It was laughable.

@Psychronia I got the impression that their little "vacation" did just that. The scummy royals insulted the culture of every other group, everyone sacrificing along with the sacrifices of their own people, implying them to be tyrants of sorts—by leaving, while no direct harm is caused, the ensuing panic at the "Introduction Ball" (the Saints left on a vacation cuz the representatives of nation x act like trolls and oligarchs who if they took power from their family would likely mistreat their own people—the giveaway is their attitude—likewise, it's quite possibly a mock to countries like the US who live in relative security thanks to two oceans, who might not want to offer aid, and thus withdraw globally—like if one took the miasma to be a !metaphor of climate change and environmental harm. US policy has been to refuse to sacrifice. Not a perfect analogy, but one could take the sociopolitical leap to view the way the royals are acting as a snub of my country's current administration (a leap, assured!, but it's possible).

If they were just immature and taking out the suffering of their people, I could appreciate their concerns & chalk it up to immaturity, but because of their comments in private—they seem to hold traditional values (at least Japanese ones) of how superior nobility/royalty is compared with commoners (ironically, completely dismissing the very purpose for the distinction/duty (noblesse oblige).

But. In any event, the chapters have been excellent and I'm glad-filled to see where the story travels! :3
