anyway the gun and military otaku AFAIK was/is one of the biggest otaku fan base outside of Anime and trains, IIRC there's a kinda documentary on that (or maybe I just misremembered and it actually something else lol)
thing is I don't think you can have a gun ownership there so best thing they do is airsoft gun and "researching" extensively about guns and military in general
and about going to America, maybe either it's a non-priority list (not to mention language barrier) or simply can't afford it, or scared... what? you telling me those hikkikomori can actually go to other country? I don't even think they can go to their neighbor's house lol

i think often when people mention Otaku immediately thinking about hikki.. as far as i know or what i understand, otaku is a person who devoted his/her own life for his/her own hobby. They will buy anything that they can afford and even lear another language to achieve their goal. As loong is in their reach.

once again i apologize if i mistaken, i kinda hesitate made this comment because i'm afraid is just misunderstanding.

nah it's okay, I meant it as a joke really, I know otaku isn't always a hikki and vice versa

anyway yes, they will do (almost) anything to achieve their goal, but for many of them, they prefer the "safe bubble" which is Japan, their own country
I believe there are otakus who actually go overseas but we just don't hear it here, maybe if we can read moonrunes and lurk on 2ch lol

@primrosea ah.. i see...certainly that the case. and i didn't even ever see it with my own eye. I just heard a story from one of my friend relative that people who devoted their live and even go oversea to learn about foreign culture, but mainly is just middle age people who doing that.

as for this story premise, the protagonist is stil college. unless she's going to college oversea, that would be possible. Mainly because i never heard ordinary citizens in japan can do shooting training. or maybe i'm just to ignorant about that. Well regardless, i usually don't questioned about the premise of the story. Is just interesting to answering the question, it's seems like a minor detail. But when i think about it again, it really going to get impact for the story later on. 😄😄

Jesus this was like 90% exposition and backstory with like 9.9% being just about her addiciton and the .1% being a basic grasp of her personality.

@madx1 and you want her to build a gun with just that and the technology and even more importantly the materials of the current blacksmiths of her era? because let me remind you plastic is not a thing in her era, petroleum has yet to be discovered, she will have to use the common metals and methods that the current artisans have at their disposition, and she also has to make the ammunition, and everything else on the gun.

Also she is not a tradesman, she is not a mechanist, and the ones that she will find are the ones with the skill and abilities of a mechanist of that era, which means, at best, basic gear mechanics used to make clockwork, and as far as weapons engineering goes she may get a riffle or a blunderbuss, however she wants modern weapons.

@Doomroar That wasn't your argument. I just had issue with your argument that a degree is essential for anything. The MC really shouldn't be able to manufacture any advanced firearm tho.

@madx1 in that case a tradesman or mechanic degree may still not be enough, even if she had them (which she doesn't) because they may not even cover the specific knowledge required for modern weapon manufacturing, which is actually quite complex.
