It's funny how absolutely nobody in this comment section noticed the fact that Thorfinn didn't reject Einar's decision to kill and absolutely understand the nuances on the action that Einar took while Thorfinn was away. No discussion of Einar carrying the weight of his actions for the rest of his life (which could be short for all we know). It's just the usual "hurr Torfin is a bad leader, hurr should have stayed a killer, hurr genocide the natives."

He didn't have to explicitly reject it; Einar's own internal monologue shows that he's tortured, not merely by the fact that he killed a man, but by the knowledge that he did have a choice. He's trying to console himself by saying he didn't, but even if Thorfinn told him what he wanted to hear, he'd still know deep down that it was a lie. He knows that he had a chance to avoid war, but did not take it. Choosing war means choosing death, for both your enemies and your friends. Even if he survives, that choice will haunt him for the rest of his life.

Some people really are unaware of the current events in the world. The majority want peace in Ukraine, Middle East, Asia and Africa yet it's not happening.
Do they, though? If peace is so popular, why does campaigning for war see so much success? Over Christmas, I met with some family members who think that threatening war with Canada and Mexico is proof that Trump is "brilliant negotiator". People like them won the last election.
Conflict is a necessity towards peace. Just ask the Palestinians who are constantly being invaded without constraint by an encroaching ideology funded by a world power or even the revolutionaries throughout history who fought for their lives to improve their people's conditions.
And Palestine is at peace now, is it? Palestine's retaliation is understandable given the circumstances they are in, but it has not gotten them an inch closer to peace.
MLK said it best, "Riot is the voice of the unheard"
If you're familiar with his broader body of speeches, you'd have seen MLK explain that destruction of property is not comparable to violence against persons.
JFK's quote is cool too: "Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable"
And it was Ivar and his crew that made peaceful revolution impossible.
The American Civil War begged to differ which ended the Confederacy to eliminate slavery.
The south, which started the war in the first place, was explicitly doing so in order to install a government that would perpetuate slavery and race-based legal rights (or lack thereof) in perpetuity. An autocratic government did not take power as a result of a violent revolution because the violent revolutionaries lost.

Never went to the comments for this series but watching this beloved series turn into a dumpster fire these past 7 years has been agonizing. Fuck Yukimura for being a self hating cuck.

Einar was one of the best characters from the Slave Arc, he felt like a real person, he was the only character I was still rooting far because he actually took arms and defended what he believed unlike a certain cuck protagonist. The author then proceeds to completely ruin the character in one chapter without any indication previously that he was feeling guilty of murking an Indian and then murder him completely out of nowhere in the most retarded way possible for good measure. Fuck this.

10 years of a good character thrown out in 1 chapter, honestly this shit should be in a museum.

So many aggressive reactions to this manga.. some comments are more disappointing than Einar being stabbed for upholding the peace. Why are these pessimistically aggressive people even reading and following the story?... Just stop reading it from now on? Wouldn't that solve your problem with the manga altogether rather than coming back to it only to nourish your pessimistic and aggressive take on life? Please, if you don't like the manga, stop reading it. If you want violence, choose another manga: this manga is about the consequences of violence and revenge, and finding alternative solutions. This will blow your mind and you will be shocked... read the name of the manga and make out its meaning. Understand that this manga was always named the same way despite of its depicted violence - that it had a particular goal in mind portrayed through a "(Vinland) Saga". Is your mind blown? Please stop reading this now if you don't agree with the idea of Vinland, pleaaaase staaaph noow  now, every time you read the name of the manga, make the active choice of avoiding it if you can't deal with what it is exploring. Do yourselves and us all a favor :notlikethis:

Anyway, Einar is still a hero. Now everyone knows what war is and can choose to flee in order to live in peace or instead really contribute to finding ways to avoid future wars. A dead person in war is someone's brother, sister, mother, father, son, daughter, lover and friend - never forget that. Aggression and taking lives hurt everyone in its immediate surrounding (ripple effect). Anger and negativity corrodes the body and mind: it's a poison. So, right now, everyone can understand Thorfinn (non-violence) but also the alternative devastating solution (violence). They have all lost family or friends now, killed someone's family and friends, and had their hearts and minds poisoned.

My only critique of Thorfinn is that he never showed them how strong he is and he never taught them self-defence so that they wouldn't live in fear. The arm cut might never have happened if he had done so as they would feel some security having skilled warriors (Hild, Thorfinn, and the viking soldiers). There's nothing wrong with knowing how to defend oneself without instigating violence. Building a fort was a good choice, but not the aggressions. The aggressions and fear started this, and now, they are stuck in this mess of added aggression and fear. They fleed from a problem but created the same problem elsewhere. At least now, like stated, all of them know the hurt and pain of war now, so they may make good choices from now on if they can deal with their rage and itching need for revenge. They all need to become like Thors and Thorfinn: True warriors (of peace and peaceful conflict resolution). These true warriors have at least security in knowing how to defend themselves, and could live with little to no fear (which is not the case for the rest yet). A true warrior necessarily also forgives, as Hild forgave Thorfinn, as Thorfinn forgave himself, as Thorfinn forgave the shaman and Askeladd, etc, so as to have no enemies.

Take care everyone :salute::hearts: be a good boi and gurl, and choose Vinland not Violence. Be true warriors :chad::glee:

It's so poignant that in this entire manga about the actions that we take towards a common goal it is the undeniable good guy that gets saddle with the responsibility of every other shitty persons actions by some readers.
Thorfinn is the leader as such takes responsibility, thats why Hilde announced that she would/should shoot. He hesitated probably because of his extreme pacifism stance that killing even in self defense is wrong and everyone should use viking kung fu (which he mastered by killing countless people) to fend off attackers. He should step down and live in the woods in iceland with his family or join the tinkers in a wheel of time. He ain't leader material. Tho she may have already been too late to stop the attack his hesitation could of been the diffence in other scenarios.
