and that also reflects the author's own frustration - he can only be an observer, from the outside, even for his own ideals
how he actually sees himself and what the real world reflects back at him is a painful reminder of that

given the afterwords we've gotten, it seems like both his male and female characters are him. his male characters are self-explanatory, but his female characters seem more like a tacit admission that he probably could've ended up like that had he been born a woman.

i wonder if he goes to therapy. he seems like he has a lot of stuff he's still working through
