「WHAT IS UP WITH THESE BRACKETS」

i've noticed the usage of these kinds of brackets: 「EXAMPLE」quite a bit in manga and was curious about their meaning. they seem to be used interchangeably with either parenthesis or quotation marks and i wanted to know why one would use this over traditional punctuation. is it for something that can't be literally translated and the closest word choice goes into brackets? why is it so prevalent? why does it bother me so much???

@421cookies i figured it would be something like that. are there particular cases where it would or would not be used? i seem to see it thrown in liberally in places where it makes no sense to be used, here for example:

in this context i wouldn't think that either Being Praised or School Year Results would naturally have quotes, but i think that The Hero of Darkness probably would. is it just at the translator's discretion or are there actual different grammatical rules in play that im not aware of?

@Plykiya this is a prime example of what i mean! unless there's non-english grammar rules im oblivious to i wouldn't think that there's any reason for Stand to be either bracketed, quoted, or in parenthesis. is it a stylistic choice?

It's often used as a lampshaded or gimmick word. Like in Ply's example, Stands are a special power only a few have and are a key trope to the series. Or like I've seen it used in cases where someone is impersonating another character, they will use 「Ｉ」or if someone is in on it, they would say the 「Ｎａｍｅ」in brackets as well while referring to them.

in that particular summary, the why it is being bracketed like that because the japanese summary is also like that

Be warned, the author is NisiOisiN. It also has an anime (but I didn't watch it).
