Not just any criminal, but a criminal that harmed some scumbag noble. If the criminal killed innocent kids or the world's nicest person, it would be a different story. But no, they're doing it because they're greedy even though they already got good loot, and not out of good intentions.

I feel like reading this chapter as unambiguous in either direction (thinking what MC did this chapter was irredeemably evil, or thinking what he did was fully justified) is a disservice to how hard the author worked to set up an unfortunate and ambiguous situation.

I mean, we even see him thinking about how all that cooking equipment would be really nice and literally say he'd kill for it. It's not even subtext that he's desensitised to killing and treating people's lives trivially.

And "they should have known the risks" isn't even an argument. By that logic, we should have had no pity for any of MC's party should they have perished in their attempt to break the level ceiling. All of these people risk their lives for money. That's their job. Why do they not deserve pity if they perish while doing dangerous jobs that are important to their society? So fuck "they knew the risks". They weren't doing anything particularly wrong; as far as they know MC is just a dangerous criminal.

But what is true is that MC's life is on the line. No matter how I shake it, he has some level of right to self-defense. Does that self-defense extend as far as killing someone innocent who had already surrendered and offered to back off, because they might send more people after him after they report back? ...Honestly, that's probably not really morally justifiable at all. The thing is, that's why it's good writing. Trivializing everything he's doing as "totally justifiable" is missing the damn point. MC is just a human and he's not always necessarily making the right choices, and we can be confident he has to live with the consequences later.

Moral ambiguity has been one of the core themes of this the whole time. MC frequently chooses violence in moments where it's questionable whether it only makes things worse. Gon was a thug who shakes down people for money and attacks innocent people when he's pissed. One of the hobgoblins MC killed was clearly intelligent and grieving for the loss of his tribe, who all technically did nothing until they were attacked... If you read this like it's just another OP MC isekai that you're supposed to read with your brain turned off or all your justifications ready-to-hand, you're really doing it a disservice!
