I think you have it wrong about him.
Heavy Spoiler for most -
He's far from being destined to do anything. There are certain things like having a compilation soul - from 4 broken hero souls. I suspect the possibility to have death magic (once no longer on Earth which doesn't have magic), is from the former souls being destroyed by it. That it became part of the fragments.

IIRC Vida could not successfully grant him any destiny - that was a failure. She just didn't have the power at the time (was barely able to maintain consciousness) and her attempt was swallowed by his massive mana pool. But she was able to break him out of Rodcorte's system and disrupt the sad fate he had prepared. Hence why Van isn't a human. She wanted to bless him, but was unable.

Still that gave him a chance, and the unusual soul combined with the empty frame allowed for the unusual level of mana. Van created his own destiny, although obviously with a lot of help. Things very well could have went far differently.

I know this is going to sound very extremist and bad: I don't give a damn. What I mean by this:
Your proposition, and the author's in a way, is that even though he is a compilation of the fragments of souls, he still lacks the "destiny" to become the Holy Son and thus it's one of his achievements nonetheless. (Death Magic is unrelated to the compilation by the way, I will later in this comment explain what I think happened and why Vandar ended up with that particular skillset).
The rebutal would be the presentation: Even if that was the author's intent, it doesn't show that way at all.
a) He gets the title of Holy Son because he is recognized, sure. But he also gets favors from every Vida supporting demigod just because he is who he is, before he even gets to interact with them. That is a Fated One, not an achievement he got on his own effort.
b) Even though he is not "destined" to help Vida in any way, she still pulls his soul into her cycle, had she not done so, he would have probably not become Holy Son at that young of an age and maybe not at all (because he would be culturally immersed in the Alda religion and it's perfectly possible for him not to meet a Vida believer in his whole life, actually).
c) Everything Vandar does up to the point where he gets the demigods' help (and some of that too) could be done without the premise of him being a compilation of the champions. Even if the author tries to divert the idea that it's because he is a compilation, there is no reason for him to be a compilation other than that, so it's naturally asociated. In short: the reason the author included the fact he is a compilation (because it doesn't affect the story in any other way) is to justify him helping Vida. This is a very important point and I will repeat it a third time with another phrasing: Him being a compilation doesn't help the advancement of the plot AT ALL except to justify him being fated to help Vida. Which is, actually, quite poisonous to the reader and the work: it opens the doors to people like me, who would otherwise not complain about this point at all, to complain. And it pretty much pleases no one, I think, in a way that the same character without being a compilation would not.
About the Death Magic ... Well, it looks to me like a recycled idea of some sort. Mostly because it manifests itself in two contradictory ways which are never explained (because the internal works of any system in the novel are always left half hidden and half broken ... ).
On one side, you have the Abscense of Purpose and Meaning (stupid reference, ignore it please): because he was stripped from everything in a context where he should have something, he developed an affinity with nothingness, or the void, or however you want to call it. This is consistent with how the early Death Magic works on every observable instance except spirit communication and control (which can be also seen as a perversion of this concept, but since it fits better into the other way of manifestation, I prefer to consider it to be part of it). This manifestation of Death Magic controls the abscense of things more than it's presence: a flame that absorbs (causes an abscense of) heat, a barrier that absorbs ( '' ) kinetic energy, he removes (abscense again) the aging from a body, and ultimately he can "break" (cast into abscense) souls. During the fight against the orc it's even hinted that Vandar can't use Death Magic in any offensive way against him, since there is nothing significative enough he can remove. (Even though at this time there are also uses of Death Magic that don't fit into this category, like the familiar skulls).
On another side, you have Death and everything related to it. There is no explanation as to why Vandar would gain power over death. Spirit communication is gained because he is unable to communicate with the living and somehow has affinity with the dead. The only explanation to be given is because of the "Death Attribute", so it's a semantic relationship (because Death Attribute magic doesn't, actually, have anything to do with death in a way that any other attribute doesn't: it can cause death just like any other, and it has applications unrelated to death or the dead like any other). Essentially, he gains control over the dead because his magic is CALLED "Death Magic". This later evolves in him being able to communicate and control spirits, raise undead (who are not exactly undead, but almost), and gives him a completely unnecesary enticement skill which, by the way, he should not have (Vandar doesn't interact with the dead more, or in a more meaningful way, than any other person does with any other thing. And any spiritualist (which do exist) over the course of their lifetime would interact more, and probably in more meaningful ways, than a couple of months old child did with literally 5 spirits).
End of rant.

@firefish5000 the spiritform takes after the strongest emotions and feelings at the time of death that was basically burnt into the soul. For the mother, it was the torturing, not the burning. The same way the bandit leader had his neck still turned while the other bandits were pretty much normal. It was too much of a shock for him so that it burned itself into the soul.
Don't know how much of a spoiler that is but
later there appears a ghost who has no damage despite being horribly mutilated simply because it forgot how it died

Thanks, I guess that makes sense. That spoiler was both hilarious and informative. I doubt that it matters much to the plot.
Though, that does bring the question, can a spirits body change after death? For instance, in a few years, as our new taxi driver becomes more and more identified with the carriage, will his spirit form also transform into a carriage? With the revenge done, can the sisters put their burnt souls behind them and become beauties once more?
We did not get to see the spirit form of most of our inanimate objects, so I guess I will have to wait for the carriage to break or be upgraded and see what he looks like then.

In contrast to the novel this is really horrible... poor author got his manga crippled like this and the novel got downgraded by yoshi what a disgrace.

@necromach When the author heard he would get his novel adapted as manga i'm sure he was happy but this? Is that his manga? This series wasn't supposed to be a comedy you know. Nor where there supposed to be this many time skips, and about "not give a fuck about it" I give a fuck about it, the novel is interesting and I want the novel to be the same not turned upside down like this.

While I had to drop the novel because yoshi started being full liberal translator turning Death Mage into The Adventures of Tom Sawyer...

@izaya_onisai nah it is pretty close to the novel. Timeskips are pretty normal and if you compare this with other serializations you see that it doesn't take many liberations. That time I got reincarnated as a slime, I'm a spider, so what, overlord, youjo senki, all have alterations in their manga forms. some less some more. If you read youjo senki especially you see so many comedic elements that weren't in the novel but made it not worse.
Also, Deathmage always had some sort of comedic scenes so it is not too shocking to see it happen in the manga too.
Of course, I am not gonna defend horrible adaptations, where only the name remains(negi magi), but this is, at least up to this point, not the case.

@izaya_onisai The adaptation seems to be pretty good so far although I do feel like the manga will fail to properly represent the more gruesome scenes. Still the novel regularly depicts comedic scenes despite how morbid it can be at times.

Time skips are also acceptable as long as they don't miss any important details or events. Especially since the first 30-40 chapters of the novel are pretty slow and off-putting.

There are two possible answers to this:
1- Personal perception: Van's mother was "burned alive" but she had a clear image of what she was.
She was strong willed and resisted until the end, the maid sisters weren't this strong.

2- Burning people at the stake doesn't result in a charred corpse for real: This one is more of a realistic thing, the flames of such execution method weren't strong enough to fully burn people. People actually died suffocated by the smoke and they were either buried like that, or had their remains burned down in a proper Pyre. It's more of a torture method than a proper execution really.

Man I can't wait for a certain arc at least if they can reach it. I do hope they add Side Stories from the LN/WB because those are kinda important to see only because they give in sight in some characters or builds the world more.

The arc i'm talking about is where the Shield Nation Mirg attacks Van and co I can't wait to see that arc that is without a doubt my favorite arc in death mage in terms of translated. I also love the times where we see the reincarnated individuals. Especially seeing Kanata getting his soul destroyed.

Yoshi clarified that the side chapters are really part of the main story. I forgot the reason why they were called side chapters but not really.
