Argh. I really want to like this manga, but it's really tripping up my suspension of disbelief in one key area.

PREAMBLE: If your reaction basically amounts to "Dude, it's just a story" then feel free to simply ignore me. For myself, I ascribe to the odd paradox that, unlike real life, fiction has to make sense. You're allowed only one unicorn in your garden, and in this story, that unicorn is "It's another world where people are unusually short-lived."

ALSO: I'm relying on the translation provided by Chibi Multiverse. If you think that something in this title that I'm basing my assumptions on is a mistranslation, please do chime in and give your reasons in detail.

It's an essential rule of thumb for writing fiction. In essence, your "unicorn" is supposed to be that one unbelievable thing in your story that is regarded as "normal" or "common sense" by everyone in the setting. You cannot have more than one, because doing so makes it harder for your audience to suspend their disbelief.

The only exceptions are where the other things are a direct result of that "Unicorn in the Garden". For example, if your unicorn actually is a unicorn in someone's backyard garden, then it would be sensible to say that the flowers in that garden are beautiful to an unearthly degree, because, you know, mystical unicorn powers.

The first bit is the part in the very first chapter where Ceres says, word-for-word, that "In this world, I am basically a gerontophile."

This really bugs me, because if you ask any medical professional worth their salt, they'll tell you, "Fuck yeah, the status of the human body definitely effects the mind!" And Ceres is a teenager with a teenager's hormones.

Yes, yes, I know. Mind of a 40-year old man.

And really, I would NORMALLY let this slide. It actually is believable that someone, even at Ceres's age, would much rather be around an emotionally and psychologically mature woman, and not a young and inexperienced teenager who's still wet behind the ears and prone to hormone-driven mood swings.

But being sexually attracted to women who are past their middle-age and coming up on being seniors? We're not talking about MILFs anymore, these are straight-up GILFs. That is definitely a kink, or maybe even a fetish.

But usually this is the result of a person's first sexual encounter being with someone who is elderly. And that wasn't the implication we got from Ceres when he was talking about his past-life. Instead, we're given the implication of man with a wife and a child. This means that his wife was someone in his age bracket when they got married, and not a woman who's already had her menopause.

AND YES. I KNOW. There are people who actually are gerontophiles. But while it's not exactly rare, it's not exactly common, either. So I MIGHT let it slide...

...Except that there's this one... other... thing...

Ceres says (again) in the very first chapter, (again) word-for-word, "People of this world only live up to the age of fifty."

And the women here are supposed to be in their 30's - which, in this setting, is supposed to be the equivalent of being 50~55 years old IN REAL LIFE. But they're drawn more like they're IRL early-20's, or, in this setting's terms, like they're 16~18 years old.

So, I'm going to assume this means that (NOT accounting for infant and child mortalities), 50 years is the average age at time of death in this world. And while there are probably outliers that live to be 60 or 70 years old, so too would there be outliers that croak after only 30 or 40 years. So the average would still about 50 years.

In real life, assuming that a person has lived a moderately healthy lifestyle and they die of natural causes, most people are expected to live about 70~80 years, and you're considered "middle-aged" by the time you're 40. This is about when people would normally be showing signs of aging. You'll have signs of aging like "laugh lines" and "crows feet" on your face at the very least.

Now. If we scale the human life cycle to fit in the timeframe of fifty years instead of eighty years... Then you're considered middle-aged by the time you're 20~25 years old.

And these women are all supposed to be in their mid-thirties.

I'm not expecting them to be drawn like old hags or anything ridiculous like that... But I cannot honestly accept "These woman are coming up on being senior citizens" when they're drawn like this.

So, you have these women who all look as fresh as daisies, and Ceres claims to be a gerontophile.

In real-life terms, this would be like being 20 years old, making a claim that clearly implies that only people aged 55 and up turn you on, but instead you're going after people who look like they're 30.

Mmmyeah, no, sorry, that just completely breaks my suspension of disbelief. It'd be one thing if he said that he prefers a woman with a mature personality, but being a gerontophile? It just doesn't work for me.

Which is, honestly, a goddamned shame. I like the premise of the story. It's utterly and outlandishly hilarious for taking the "Yeah, well, I fucked your mom" joke and hanging a story on it. And you can honestly say that this wildly subverts the "Revenge Porn" trope by making it pornography where he fucks all the mothers of the hero's party.

And it doesn't go the typical route of "Revenge Porn" stories where the people that wronged the main character suffer hideous and gruesome fates. But instead, from what I've seen in the spoilers, they all wind up having good learning experiences as a result of their actions, and... well.. ironically, they finally "grow up".

I also love the absolutely devious idea of not only getting the ex-husbands to reform by gifting them with slave-wives who will whip them all into shape, but also resemble their daughters. And this to show the ladies in the hero party just what kind of men their fathers are.

(Although, honestly, I don't think this is much of a thing because, by all rights, a child should resemble their parents. So it's only natural that a daughter would have a resemblance to the kind of woman their father likes. Some men are even proud that their daughter reminds them of their wife, especially in the bittersweet cases of widowers. So this is also a point where I'm like, "Reeeaaaallly now?")

So I'm thinking about dropping this and reading the LN instead... eeeeeexcept that I'm also hearing that it seems that the author didn't know where and how to end the story, and their creative juices have all dried up.

God -fucking-dammit.

Thanks ChibiMultiverse team for all the chapters thus far! Overall such a fun and enjoyable read. It’s crazy to me that this hasn’t even gotten to chapter 20 and it has around 90k bookmarks. I really hope this continues for a long time, cause the foundational recipe is solid.

Also, man, Misaki abs look incredible. Based mangaka for the clear representation. Gotta love it.
