While many people would have wished for it, I think in the end there was just no use for a full on fight. Mahoro already made all the necessary preparations and said what she had to say. More than that would just be unnecessary stress and I think Mahoro is already tired of everything, so just walking away is one of the best choices.

Its extremely common and open for MiL to act just like Rei's Mom in Asian countries. ITs also way too commonin the west but they are usually a little more passive aggressive about it.

He's upset that he got caught. That's what makes it so gross. Its like someone taking away a toy you don't even want to play with anymore. You're mad not because you care but because someone would dare do that but that toy is another fully grown person. He's upset because it will make him look bad in the future and if he gets married without telling others and tries this again, it will be easier for that future person to divorce him too.
