I think they dont want to skip the fight nor intend to kill. They want him to be subdued with honor so he'd stick around and cooperate when they sue for peace.
This guy is the head of Alois kingdom and the one who took Starveek and pretty much decimated their royal family (except Cleria who managed to run away), even if Alan wanted to keep him alive, everyone else from Starveek will want his head.

Alan and co. also aimed to takeover both Berta and Alois, so it makes little sense that they are going to let the kings of these kingdoms alive, especially since one betrayed Starveek and the other took it over. Plus having any royals from kingdom they took over is just a seed for future troubles.

I think the most likely plan is for Cleria or Alan to do the execution, preferably in public and displaying the corpse, like what King Alois did to the Starveek Royal Family.
Both as Cleria's and her followers' revenge, and to add legitimacy to her claim to the former Starveek Kingdom that their society accepts. Like the situation with the women that Alan rescued from bandits killing their rapists with their own hands made it so that their honor was restored in their society's eyes, something similar is probably going on here.

Sure, even if that’s he case, doesn’t mean she has to go melee against him.
She could just as easily shoot at his legs or ankle to disable him. And if she didn’t over do it, he can be disabled or disarmed without losing his limbs, just functions of it perhaps, not too far from the results of the melee.

Or, alternatively, I’m surprised they don’t have a space age stun gun or something ranged and not lethal to apprehend criminals.

Being seen in battle is probably part of the calculus for the battle's strategic and political objectives.
Showing off to both allies and enemies.
Also Selina is a bit of a blood knight, as seen previously, so her desire to have a close-combat fight should also be factored in.
On top of that, since they were told that an Artifact would be on the field, she probably engaged in close combat to draw out its use, and to see it in action.
Knowing the extent to which Artifacts are able to stand up against Imperial technology is very important information, especially given that Alan and Iris don't know when they might have to face another one.

As for not having non-lethal weapons, they might have something from their shipboard MPs' weapons locker, unless that was also destroyed during the accident. But the pulse rifle appears to be able to function in a non-lethal capacity with its guided shot mode.

Why would you reveal your hand like that? Military secrets are secrets for a reason.
Cause they're not really a threat and they can't do anything about it anyways. In fact they can probably massacre the entire army but that won't do since Alois is formerly Starveek Kingdom after all, they can't just kill their future subjects.
Not to mention, why take a sword and gun as a weapon if you don’t want to kill people?
They needed the king alive to make a show out of him and make the Alois army retreat. It's not like she didn't want to kill.

They probably keep him alive for show. Public execution and all that.
