Kinda explained on flashback, he got summoned, he train, and he got some kind of expectation or mission, and he failed.
Prob huge factor why he treated that way, maybe the whole country label him a failure or something
pretty much. Unfair to him to describe it as failure. Seems like a conscientious objection to me. I already like him for getting a taste of status and giving it up to not torment others as part of a war machine. The fact that he did that even when that other person was a GIANT FUCKOFF AUSTRAILIAN ASS SPIDER really drives it home. Makes isekai protagonist that exclusively save (or buy) cute girls look weak.

Overlooking the fact that harems are terrible for a moment

Why are high schoolers keep getting shipped with middle-aged men??! If you saw that in real life you wouldn't go "aww what a romantic Romeo and Juliet", you'd call the cops on that guy because it's creepy as hell

If you saw that in real life
Where in the hell in real life am I going to see a sapient octopus pledging to marry someone, keeping to that intention at least a decade later?

I cannot stand how this argument is used-- actually pay attention to the context of the story you're consuming.

Not only that, but have you noticed that the guy is doing literally nothing but getting glommed on by the octopus woman? Why would I be calling the cops on the guy? He just wants to be a teacher-- he's putting up with her lack of boundaries.

I read the raws, which are available at https://ganma.jp/monstermusume (also linked in the title page). I can confirm that this is a harem, as already implied by the flashbacks to the classroom of monsters.

Here's the next girl, a spider girl. She was originally named "Kumoko" (literally means "spider girl") and now goes by "Aria".

Don't be daft. You know I was talking about the age and power gap, not the species difference.
There's nothing wrong with a good monster girl romance.

My critique was of the author, not the story. This is obviously a romance manga; we all know where it is going. The mere fact that someone considers "middle-aged teacher falling in love (/lust) with his adolescent student(s)" a good story to tell, that's the problem I was arguing against.

Well, would that be set in a real-life-ish setting, argument would be more valid.
This one? Eh, fantasy world(with not yet stated morals)+basically interspecies relations? Too many hoops to jump through for a direct comparison, IMO.
Unless you view all fictional equivalent to real, in which case, god bless your unending fight for moral high ground, cus I won't.
