From what I saw from other comments in other places, this manga is adapting from the light novel, not the web novel. With formal editors and re-writes, light novel versions tend to be significantly different than the web novel versions.

i`ve been read the Web novel abit. and yes there are differences. like his commoner kouhai, is a guy in wn. and has a great wind spirit lazying around is house. and shuya was not informed about the spy by the headmaster . he discovered it when piggy ask him for a divination for a clue about the spy.
though its natural, but the web novel is messy. and his personality is more frantic and romantic/ambitious. while here he is calm, and stoic.
