No, he probably get paid more than average salary for his work hours, he seem like a smart man with some ambitions.
He probably chose to work there because it's close to home and his salary bonus from being a shift manager want cary over with the job change, for reasons of it being to minor of a position.
It's sad but it's what you get with no education and family support in our times.

The best move for him wood be to make his own company while working normal 9/5 whit no overtime, but he has no good idea for a company nor an interest in higher education. And that's the real problem.(For him as an interesting Ms)
