It's honestly missing from a LOT of media to the point it almost seems like a forgotten aspect of narrative. It's the difference between a well told story with a start and an end; versus endless sequels and spin-offs that increasingly degrade the original work by their very existence. There must be closure, or a work is not complete.

And you're right about this specifically, because how many other works could you see ending with maybe a quarter chapter worth of Falin being saved/restored, and everybody walks off happy into the sunset? It's yet another example of how Ryōko Kui is a masterful writer in addition to being a talented artist.

Okay, so maybe a lot of manga that end like that miiiiiight have suffered from abrupt editorially mandated cancellation, but still.

This author is keeping the momentum of the end superbly, there was just a little stutter a few chapters back right after the demon defeat, but she got back quickly and this end is really fun.

But truth be told... I don't need another story with Laius and company, but I would love some more stories in this world, Kui-sensei crafted a very complex and compelling world with this story, and we stayed all this time in one small island that isn't even the only dungeon in this world. And now that the demon is "dead", the dungeon crafting system is probably completely destroyed which will have consequences in the world's politics and even economics, with all that possibility i think a new story could be made, just using the same world.

And on a kinda "out of left field" note, there are even rarer cases where even with cancellation the author gave a somewhat good ending, Psyren is the only one that comes to mind but boy... even if there was still a story to be told, that end still was good.

And maybe I am wrong... but did you have e Naruto in mind with the endless spin-offs? Because if so... yeah, Fujimoto (most probably convinced by his editorial team) really is milking that story into oblivion.

Surprisingly, Bleach which had a very rocky end too is getting back strong, probably because Kubo really hates how Jump's work ethic and he must have said many hard NOs before returning with a strong comeback, which paid off in my opinion.

Man, I still can't help but think this is building up to some kind of twist that'll make a bittersweet ending or something.

Not impossible.

Laius did step on some toes with his stunt, and even if it succeeded... I doubt the power that be will just look the other way.

There are the two "lords" of the island that aren't liking very much this story about Laius being the new "owner" of the island, without the dungeon they don't have their income, but they still must have some pull.

And there is Marcille's situation... if someone with digs a little into how Fallin became a dragon, hell if someone just remembers that she became the dungeon lady for a time, coupled with her half-elf status... I wouldn't doubt the elf queen would be a "little" peeved with her. We don't know how much the "dislike" extends to, but she is an elitist that doesn't like half-breeds.

Exactly! Their story has been told, and no more needs to be said. The world itself, however, practically demands more stories told in it. Thank god for fan fiction if nothing else.

Basically anything that starts with "Star" at this point. Yes, both.

On the other hand, Gunnm/Battle Angel Alita was a tight, well told manga with a slightly abrupt but still satisfying ending, while every part of the series since has been utterly banal (how do make that first series then make the second one a tournament arc that lasts for 2/3 of it? HOW.)

Ok... I will be sincere here... I LOVE Gunnm.

For me it is one of the best sci-fi stories that is true to the concept of cyberpunk, ever told, I understand why you don't like it, and why you think the tournament extended too much... which it really did, but I still like everything about it.

And about the finale of the first "series", maybe you don't know, but that end wasn't what the author had in mind, during that time Kishiro-sensei's health took a nosedive, he really was certain that he would die so he didn't want for his story to be left untold, so he kinda compressed a few key points of what he had planned and gave the first Gunnm an end.

But he got better, and a few years later resolved to continue the story.

The ZOTT arc is long but I think the reason is because it is more a historical point in the story of the world than a simple tournament arc.

The Gunnm world has a VERY well crafted story, and I mean that in a historical sense, Kishiro-sensei has crafted a tight timeline with historical events that the more it expands the more you see that things we are first told arent the complete truth.

The third "series" is dealing with Alita's(Gally) past and the end of the Gunthral may not have been as simple as LO made it to be, and Alita herself has an origin that was not only unexpected but completely goes with how fucked up society can be in that world.

I don't know what exactly you don't like about Gunnm, and as I said I understand why you could not live it, it isn't a perfect story there are flaws both in writing and preference, but to me... well... truth be told on a personal level I do label it as perfect XD.

The first series is probably the greatest sci-fi manga ever written; a glorious sprawling epic that asks and answers questions about what it means to be human through the growth of a well-developed character incredibly true to life flaws and all, drawn with skill I'd say is easily within the top five of all-time artists who ever worked in the medium. All showcased by world building second to few.

The sequel is, again, literally a tournament arc that lasts for 2/3 to 3/4 of the entire work. The story is constantly disrupted to do flashbacks of newly introduced characters. Some of those flashbacks have flashbacks.

Despite that, it is not poorly drawn or written, and I was happy to have more Alita. It is just an interminable slog to read that dives off into the bushes every time the narrative gets going. Didactic world building is not good writing. It is about twice as long as it needs to be (coincidentally, it happens to be about twice the length of the first series). It is good. It is definitely not as good as the previous work.

Stuff like 4chan, reddit, facebook, snapchat, instagram, they all give you a dopamine rush for responses. Video games that grinds the rewarding system like mmorpgs and gatchas. Porn. Hentai. Manga. It's all super stimulants that in the end make you feel empty.

The only way to really recover from it, is to remove it as much as you can from your life and stop doing stuff that gives you instant gratification. Work out, hang out with friends, do hobbies, get outside. Recover your dopamine receptors again.

There's a difference between the two cases. The captain didn't stop moving because his last desire was eaten, but because he personally felt his last desire could no longer be fulfilled. The basic desire was still there, so it was possible to convince him to keep going

it also seems like the winged lion is aware that things work that way. in chapter 72 it mentions that it had been planning to leave a little of Thistle's desire behind, but it got too greedy and ate the whole thing

Yes. My anecdote here I went camping for only a week and didnt have reception for anything. All I had was food, my wife and a few books.

I got back home to my phone exploding. As I am scrolling through the various updates it hit me that none of this shit matters at all.

On the whole my level of life satisfaction has skyrocketed dramatically. I wasnt particularly unhappy but I can honestly say IU am twice as good as I used to be. Cause when I do occasionally engage in social media its focused specifically on my hobbies like games, books, etc. I dont even give it a chance to insert shit I dont care about. I am not constantly worn down by the world's drama, the vast majority of which I have no affect on anyway even if I was engaged. And cause I am not constantly seeking new conversations I have more time for introspection and loving on my wife which has made our relationship better.

Your brain chemistry changes in the literal sense. Its a detox.
