Because you need to go the distance with GDS. They have a stockpile of backlogged chaps, and patrons. So they can wait out a lot of smaller and unsubsidized TL groups.I wonder why hasn't anyone openly declared against gds like this, they're such an asshole for holding titles hostage
So you say. I think you're underplaying just how much circlejerking over sniping happens in this community. It's not just this one instance of GDS being shitheads that makes anybody second-guess the status-quo. As for the dumbasses who complain about randos with low-quality work, the block button works great - you never have to see a shit-scan from the same group twice if you use it. If they can't figure it out, they deserve their anguish.I should also caution people against throwing out the baby with the bathwater based on this one instance.
Most of the time our policy on sniping non-interference is criticized instead of celebrated, and for understandable reasons; the vast majority of snipes are random people unsatisfied with a quality scanlation taking too long and deciding to remedy that by haphazardly slapping nonsensical MTL slop with Times New Roman lettering onto AI-cleaned pages. It's pretty rare that an intentional snipe will be equal or better in quality, since the fast release isn't usually the better-made one.
Do you disagree with me saying the vast majority of snipes are low quality, or are you just misinterpreting me saying "this one instance" as me trying to claim this is a unique instance of the opposite happening? So you say. I appreciate that you're taking the time to explain the rationale behind such policies. My disagreement was that the baby shouldn't be thrown out with the bath water; from my point of view, the baby looks like a sewer rat. For the sake of policing anonymous idiots (the tools exist for the end-user to do that, and they work), the community empowers malicious idiots with resources behind them to do shit like GDS does. It isn't only a problem just because of squatting and profiteering - more generally, the overall quality of translation work suffers in an environment where competition is restricted and translators aren't forced to let the quality of their work compete for attention. That's all my point was. I'm saying its a good thing that Mangadex keeps its thumbs off the scales - the rest of the community should do the same. GDS exists (in part) because the anti-sniping bitchfits that get thrown every other week enables them. Other groups who are less egregious in their practices would still benefit from a fire lit under their asses.Do you disagree with me saying the vast majority of snipes are low quality, or are you just misinterpreting me saying "this one instance" as me trying to claim this is a unique instance of the opposite happening?
I'm not a sociologist, but we can (a little pretentiously) think about this in terms of game theory. When a social group comes up with a self-preservation strategy (the 3 month rule), that's pro-social behavior, cooperative agents trying to stabilize the group (scanlators trying to balance getting along with each other and continuing neglected series). The strategy works for the cooperators, but when an opportunistic antagonist comes along, they can try to hijack the strategy for their own benefit.
MangaDex itself isn't trying to prop up this status quo, so that's not what I was trying to insinuate either. You're completely right that group blocks and so on are what allow us to make it work regardless. My point was that in the cooperative environment, the 3 month strategy can still be a valuable social rule, and dismantling the pro-social behavior entirely is not the best idea either, especially when the majority of snipes are still examples of the reason the rule was made to begin with. People should just use their heads to evaluate when it's being used maliciously and when it's not.
tl;dr - MangaDex won't police snipes, but most snipes are still bad, and we shouldn't stop being critical of them just because occasional good snipes exist
Condensing my reply to just this part since it's the one I agree with the least: I really don't think the rule has much anything to do with groups like them existing and operating the way they do (or worse), and at best provides a thin veneer of cover before the good faith of the community quickly runs dry, as evidenced by this thread.GDS exists (in part) because the anti-sniping bitchfits that get thrown every other week enables them.
... and then proceeds to list multiple issues they have with GDS.Before we begin, I must emphasize that I have no issues with Galaxy Degen Scans (GDS) or any of its members.
