This is both getting worse for the better. I want to laugh in complete insanity while holding my head at this plot development. It makes too much sense but its going from 40 miles to 150 really quick now.

Congrats and major kudos on surviving a semester of grad school, full time work while working on the translations and hard work!!!! You're the GOAT!!!

Miyabi is being really silly with this project. He doesn't even know how to build the engine for the locomotive and he's aiming for a train? He should be working on a car instead; far less horsepower needed and can travel on the existing road infrastructure. It will also fulfil the intended purpose of enabling two adventurers to travel more quickly over the 600 km distance.

Beyond the myriad of issues that come with such a project (permission to build, maintenance cost, etc), it seems to me that it will attract attention to his skills and he may be "asked" to keep working on such projects to link up other cities because he'll be able to do it in a fraction of the cost and time that it would take otherwise. Changing the travel time from two weeks to 12 hours is pretty transformative for the economy and the military after all, so there's no way the nobility and royalty won't ask him to contribute further. Then again, there is apparently a guild of infrastructure and production that manages such matters, so he'll probably be shielded of such work by the guild taking on the requests to build that type of infrastructure.
MC already created a system based on wind magic as mentioned in the chapter, though on a much smaller scale. And he doesn't really need to create a full-on locomotive engine. What he need to do is create a engine with a strong body and good breaking system. As for propulsion system, the answer is magic, aka., no need for complex machinery like steam engine or electric engine, but rather need for Enchantment based powering system, which MC can already create quite easily.

He can't really create full-size prototype without getting permission on construction for the project, since he would need a lot of materials and for that he would need help to gather.

And he already mentioned why he didn't consider "above-ground" solution, as using car wouldn't really help by much, since they would be taking the same route they used to travel by the horse-cart (which isn't a simple route).
Even with car's speed, he would only be able to reduce travel time from around 2 weeks to around 4-6 days on existing route (unless he creates new roads which would create more hassle). Plus he would have to think about road-traction, anti-snow & anti-monster measurements as well.

And this isn't MC's goal with this project, as he wants Liz to be able to do Adventurer work on her weekends so that she doesn't lose her license while attends academy on weekdays. And a travel time of more than a 24 hours is going to make his goal useless.

For a roughly 600 km distance, to hit the under 12 hours of travel time target, MC would need to create an engine with high capacity to go 50+km/h on average. This kind-off speed isn't possible for a car above ground, unless the road is perfectly pitched and there are no slowing down issues (like monsters or snow storm, etc).

As for later on, yeah with this project many people would learn about MC's capabilities. But they wouldn't really need to be stuck to just MC for his help. From what i understand, except MC's huge magical capacity, his abilities with crafting is something which could be learned by other Crafters, and all they need is good training and a open mind for imagination.
Not to forget, the Duke already knows and keeping an eye on MC, so it's not like hiding his abilities is going to profit MC in anyway. Making his usefulness known is another way to keep himself alive, as some might consider him as a dangerous individual.

and fire extinguishers every 100 meters or something.
why?
it's not like he is using anything flammable for the process.

and why do people conveniently always forget that this a Isekai with Magic, why would they need a fire extinguishers, when someone can easily use Water Magic?

Wind magic for a train is... rather silly.

The only real option for that is to design and build turbines that will use wind magic to spin the turbine that will then power the wheels? I don't really see any other way for a traditional land vehicle to travel via wind otherwise due to the issues with translating wind to rotational force. If the wind magic actually created air and not wind then you could use a piston engine that runs off of high-pressure tanks, similar to a steam engine just with the magic air tanks creating the high pressure needed to operate the pistons.

You could try and turn it into a giant pneumatic tube system via futurama but then you run into the hyperloop issue of properly sealing both ends...
Based on how MC created previous enchanted items.
My guess is that MC would created enchanted blocks of wind magic, which would generate wind in one direction pushing the train forward in opposite direction. It would be similar to a turbine, but not the usual shaped ones we know of.

Magic. The answer is always magic.
Has it been established that “everyone”
Has magic? Bc other than “storing” it in mana stones or whatever or a trusted mage in charge of things to be the conductor/recharge the wind block, feels like one reason to make a train versus making a carriage a bit more advanced is so that “normal” ppl can use it without needing to be skilled themselves

Tho that lady def acted too nice to not be evil but I guess being fired is diff from implying that she got killed hopefully

He did specifically say he didn't know enough about the inner workings of a steam engine to do so unless he could somehow explain the concept to some dwarf/another 'trusted' craftsman about his idea despite him 'having overall knowledge but can't talk about specifics' (but considering carriages exist in this world so i assume some thing similar will invented eventually)

Much of the complexity of building trains is laying down the rails and wrangling the terrain (tunneling, slope grading etc), considering Miyabi can build those as he walks, trains make sense.

Horsepower doesnt have to be as big as modern locomotives as well. As long as he accounts for future expansion by choosing a good rail gauge size to begin with, he can throw together an early period steam engine with mine carts, and make horsepower future Miyabi's issue.

Duke Beldini seems to understand that pissing off Miyabi is a huge loss of potential, so he'd most probably shield him off. Or maybe we'll be introduced to a new production guild character that does that for Miyabi. It'd be a good foil to crafter's guild (since Weiss and co focused more on design instead of quantity), so we'll get to see logisticians and industrialists get a hard on from watching Miyabi. (Excel sheets can be sexy, fight me)

Trains are defo more complex than cars, but I'm guessing that's exactly why the story's going this way. Now we have crafting-related story material for at least 20 chapters :U

Honestly surprised the author actually gave the maid consequences. I guess this means there's a good chance she'll continue to be a part of the story.

If it's going to be passenger train, then bathrooms and food cart needed to be factored in.

Will the subway have multiple stops? What about ventilation, water prevention, and emergency exits?
For all worrying about this stuff... It's a slice of life Manga, not a hyper realism Train-Sim Manga. They're going to gloss over the fine details since they do not matter to the plot of the Manga. All we need to know is that there's going to be a Subway connection between the capital and duchy and that will benefit Liz and the territory through import/export efficiency. We don't need the details of the ventilation, water prevention, track maintenance, etc. It literally adds nothing to the Manga except to appease the handful of train nerds (I love trains and even I don't care about the fine details)

Just assume these details are handled in the "getting started on this project" phase that Miyabi is in and enjoy the slice of life.

and here is where miyabi goes from eccentric to straight up stupid
dumbass this isn't a pet project scale anymore dumby
:aquadrink:
ah yes trains the invention that REVOLUTIONIZED HOW HUMANS BEHAVED, WORKED, AND THOUGHT. FUCKING BEOFRE TRAINS THE FASTEST WAY TO GET MESSAGES AROUND WAS BY HORSES AND FUCKJRIDJDBFUDJRJEJDD
THERE WAS NO NEED TO STANDARDIZE TIME BEFORE TRAINS, YKNOW THAT MODERN THING WE DONT THINK ABOUT
AHHHHHHHHHHH
tldr our boy stupid im gonna go chill, this is fluff manga after all :aquadrink:
. . . Oh boy, I've given my D&D GM a headache with my artificer.

I mean... steam is kinda... wind, but under pressure(and heated), so our boy only needs solve the pressure issue to feed the same pistons of any steam locomotive, the rest is for the equivalent of mechanical engineers to solve (like control, metal expansion, etc)

wind magic also alleviates the choking to death problems of steam locomotives in long tunnels
what remains is the difference in altitude, tunneling in the right direction and fail-safes.

I suppose it all comes down to if you consider wind magic being able to create air or just manipulate existing air.

Or we could just say it's magic. :D

It's actually not that silly at all. Wind equals constant pressure flow in a certain direction. Just need enough to push it along. We've already seen a scale model iteration that works just fine, so the concept itself is sound- I do hope there's going to be some sort of issue with it that will require him to revisit the idea and rework it, though, like with the water.

Clearly an american ( tis I an american too)
in almost all aspects trains are just better. Especially when it comes to mass transportation. The reason why america is so goddamned car centric is cause of lobbying by large corporations owned by people like Ford who had an incentive for pushing their new fangled cars. Kind of fucked up that we are praising him for making the first affordable cars when in hindsight it kinda kneecapped our economic protentional by making less efficient use of space, time, and energy. but hey I'm just an amateur who picked up things here or there so what do I know. (yeah I know the assembly line was a neat innovation but it was bound to have been implemented at some point considering the simplicity of the concept) oh yeah jay walking wasn't a concept or a crime till y'know, cars were EVERYWHERE and did you know ROADS WERE ORIGINALLY MEANT FOR PEOPLE. kind of sad how conditioned we americans are for a car centric environment.TLDR cars are not exactly the best idea over trains, and Miyabi isn't only thinking of himself only anyways ( he likes building for other people, not to mention he's definitely the "journey is more important than the destination" kinda guy so his goal isn't only getting from point a to b, cause at that point just build a plane if you're going through all that effort).
Cars are individualized transport. Trains by necessity are timed transport, and can only travel set paths. All of America is larger than all of Europe. Trains are useful for long distance travel where you only act at each terminus, but that's about it. Using arguments for efficiency of cargo hauling for passenger travel does not work well.
