it really looks like Miyabi is just getting yanked back to the start from the safety rope around his waist while hes laying the tracks

The prince is so dazzling~

I was expecting something like turning it a magnet train, but that might be jumping too far ahead. I think the slope system is neat, but indeed it has some practical issues like emergency stops.

Still, as the first train in this world ever I think it's decent. If it's fine once it builds up speed, then emergency stops are rare enough for it to be chalked up as a delay. And I assume the crafts guild can handle replacing the parts that are damaged by said friction.

Pulling the train up the slope is essentially "reloading" the potential energy for the next departure, but I see it as just some more job creation. If the crafters are risking their lives on the walls and as adventurers, then surely the manual labor of pushing/pulling a train would be preferable.
I'm also imagining a system where the train is attached to a pulley and people just climb the tower carrying counterweights for the other end.

I can smell trouble coming from Giorgi for the next few chapters. People like him never really learn their lesson or disappear in this manga :haa:

thank you for translation
An important detail for this is that the tunnel reinforcement step got skipped as shown in a few infographics. I imagine Giorgi will do something that causes the tunnel to collapse.

That whole slope thing to give it speed is kinda convoluted for nothing.
The first trains were as fast as a person walking; they became the most amazing transportation devices not because they were fast but because people didn't have to walk themselves and without the weight limits animals have.
Now imagine being able to commute 600km in a single day or whatever, which this fictional train can do: the slow start is irrelevant.
I remember old cartoon that the train competed with a horse . The horse out run it at first then they came to a cliff , the horse stopped and the train continue.

I actually like the slope system, but I think it needs some more track at the end for emergency breaking, so it doesn't hit a wall if things go badly.

I can think of a few counterweight methods that they can use to power the cable that pulls it up the slope, so I'm curious as to what they decided.

NGL, I'm not fond of the need to pull a train up a ramp. Not only because it's unnecessary, but makes further expansion more difficult. It also makes it inconvenient to add the planned intervening stations. So just let momentum the train has built up push it up a ramp, and use a roundabout style hub to slow a train before redirecting it to it's next station.

Also don't really like all the moving parts needed to make that winch system work. Not only would it be easy to sabotage, the normal wear amd tear would be atrocious. Sure fantasy materials and enchantments could mitigate much of this, but the mechanisms are easily accessible to the general public, and would be in near constant use. And being down for maintenance or repair would cause all manner of issue.

That maybe true.

But the problem is that, they also need to showcase the system to other Nobles and even the key Royal figures.

Basically, they have to showcase it as perfect as possible to make it seem more viable, and not something that would be shelved immediately.
And a slow start-up could hamper that notion, since its slower than even normal walking. It would also create a big opportunity for Nobles of opposing factions to act against the Duke, as even a minor issue could give them the right ammo they need.

Its like showcasing Investors the profitable of a project while trying to fight your rival, and a initial hick-up like that could cause severe issues even loss of project.

There is also the point that, if the start-up is slow, that would mean the "target travel time" set by MC might not be achieved.

Imagine having to pull a whole train up a slope every time it gets back to station.
Shouldn't be that hard, if its empty (I mean, they do it with Roller coaster as well). We did see a few chapters back, how the Dwarf Guy was working on reducing the weight as much as possible.

Plus, i don't think it would be that long of a train. At most it would be a few carriage long (probably not more than 6-10).

Not to forget. This current Train Project is basically a Beta version.

They can't modify the design currently, as they don't have time for such implementations (they are working under a strict time-frame).

Once the first one goes live, they can take their time and fix the various others issues left to be fixed, one of which probably being need of a Slope & Hoisting, to lower future project cost. There is also the point that they also have to figure out a way to dig tunnels faster and more safely, without relying on MC. Same with laying tracks and building Stations.

The Duke would probably work towards making the whole systems as MC free as possible, just like he did with the Engine and Train part.

I don't think the Ramp & Hoisting system is meant to be a permanent solution, or something that's meant to be used for future routes.

It was just made because it was faster that way to complete the project on time, without MC interfering with the Train design and production (the Duke did forbidden him from working on the Train project, only allowing him to work on infrastructure).

I am sure, the Duke would next ask for the development of a new route, but without MC being involved in it at all, or MC only provided methods to do the process faster without his direct involvement.

The first commercial passenger train was almost three times as fast as a human walking. In first few years, trains achieved close to twice that.

It's true that something being able to move extreme loads doesn't need to be that fast. Modern trains move painfully slowly when you're talking about the heavy-duty cargo trains. But those move such massive amounts of cargo that in the times presented in the story it simply wouldn't ever be possible. They literally would not have enough cargo to move regularly.

I do agree that a slow start hardly matters over long-distance travel. But you also have to take into consideration two things.
1) They could have done that.
2) And it was impactful.

Not everything must be efficient. Extravagance sells. A mediocre product will sell better if you put it in a pretty box than if you put it in a non-distinct box with just name and information on what kind of product it is.

It would make more sense to have the loading / boarding station be up on the raised part, so they could use the momentum to pre-load the gravity acceleration. I'm guessing it's be used 2-3 times a day at most, going back and forth on a single track.

Lack of the time for a better solution than a brute forced one, is something I have a lot of experience with.

I can sort of see that argument, though I do think this is a case of perfect being the enemy of complete.

I guess the "proof of concept" was already made, but I think this is still just pioneer technology in the Duke's eyes. The train working smoothly for the next year or so would already be enough to call it a resounding success in my book.
Things like wear and tear of parts, obstacles to future expansion, and sabotage are things that they can worry about and improve upon as it comes up.

Like you said, fantasy materials and enchantments can mitigate it. But more important than those fantasy engineering shortcuts is Miyabi himself. If there really were any need to expand the rail network and rework the current ramp system, then Miyabi can dismantle and remake the entire site within the day as long as someone can figure out a blueprint. He can rapidly create replacement/spare parts too.
And that's only assuming there's any major urgency to the matter. I imagine it could be turned into an economic and social boon for Crafters and craftsmen, since the train remains productive enough in concept to be worth any maintenance costs if the Duke's estimate of 10s of millions is accurate.

Also, I'm not sure if you're just referencing something different from what I can imagine, but being down for maintenance feels like it would only become an issue if people become dependent on it to the point of lifestyle changes. This train as it's currently designed crosses 2 weeks' worth of travel in half a day, so maintenance can take a full 10 days and it would still be better sitting around waiting for maintenance to finish than not having the train at all.

I think most of you guys forgot that this train isn't ran by electricity or magic stone or steam or whatever, it is literally being pushed by wind. The only mechanical portion of this is the brake, who knows maybe he did install sail as emergency brake.

sorry man, I have no clue why the roof fell down. In minecraft stuff just flies when you remove the building pillars.

How tall is the tunnel to have room for sails? Or are you talking like airbrakes that pop out?

Also, I wonder if they're gonna add bathrooms on that thing cause a trip that's like 18 hours long is impossible for the bladder.

I guess it depends on how long it takes to pick up speed.

Yeah even in Japan it took 90 years between the first train and the bullet train. But of course we need to skip the tech ladder, this is an isekai.
It's less this, and more that he made a promise and a slow start at either station didn't fulfill the promise "correctly," so this was the best way to fix things in the short term. They can go back and rework things at a slower pace later now that the train is, at least, in working order.
