Why does MC keep him alive? He summoned the handbook, now he's fully useless, keeping him alive is a liability.
Afaik, certain actions change his alignment/status. He probably doesn't want to be any more evil than he has to be.

The Playbook is from an evil god, none of the other party members can use it due to alignment penalties, and the goth loli's evil god is directly opposed to the one that provided the book.
now that i think about it, he could have contacted the mind flayer and exchange it for support couldnt he? sure, its not exactly what they want, but having a high intelect ally with access to info that no one else has.

Since this world follows D&D rules wouldn't a natural 20 get the guy free from the ropes?

In the actual rules for both Pathfinder 1st edition and D&D 3.5, natural 20/natural 1 only counts for attack rolls and not skill checks.

Most people assume that they work on everything though, so it is quite commonly added in as a house rule.

He still needs info on current entrances and security procedures for the evil temple, the MC still needs to take out the cult leader before the ritual finishes.

There is a big difference.
Transformation would mean that it is the same individual while summoning means it is a different individual.
Not in this case. Whether the scroll turns into food, or food is created in the same place as the scroll while the scroll disappears doesn't matter, so the difference is meaningless in this context.

I know but some houserules have already appeared in this story so assuming they follow the most used rules not RAW.

A number of the house rules that have shown up have been WTF things I have never seen anyone use before, so I can't really make an assumption on which house rules they may be using.

Really until I've seen the author use Nat 20/Nat 1 on skills (and they may have and I don't remember it) I'm just going to assume it's RAW, otherwise our MC is just being really stupid.
