Neither is stupid, but they've always kept themselves so tightly wrapped up that they simply don't know how to properly express themselves. That's the journey this series is taking them on.

ML indeed speculates in LN 2 that their younger physical forms are causing their mental ages to regress as well. It's not conclusively proved, but there's plenty of anecdotal evidence.
