I wonder if Henry VIII made a similar plea when he wanted to leave his wife.

Japanese does have gender based pronouns.... For example "kanojo" for she, "kare" for he. Not to mention people of different genders using self-referential pronouns based on their sex: "boku" or "ore" for males and "atashi" for females

@HOOfan_1 that is half correct, men and women can use the term "Watashi" to refer to themselves, or the more formal "Watakushi". Men also have "Boku" as well as "Ore", the first being an informal way of saying "I", and the second a rather bold/rude way of referring to oneself. The term "Atashi" is actually just "watashi" with the "wa" at the beginning replaced with an "a" to give it a more cutesy sound, and it is by no means a specific way made for women, but it is mostly used by women, or rather, young women for the most part. At the same time, a woman can also use "Boku" to refer to herself to give their words a more masculine or bold feeling. You have a more detailed explanation here: http://nihonshock.com/2009/11/the-many-ways-to-say-i/
It still lacks quite a few words, and not all of them are explained very deeply, but it will give you an understanding, albeit superficial, of the different ways to say "I".

well yeah, but self-referential pronouns is almost unisex since every gender can use it, just rarely
blame my bad English but what I mean is you can make it intentionally vague really easy in Japanese (and you don't really need a Subject to make a sentence)

Even though they're supposed to be a holy organization...why does it feel like I'm about to storm the demon lord's castle?

Because there are practically no differences between the two.

@mimcoa it makes sense in the time period its in. Being openly atheist or have the churches ire on you can ruin you due to how influential the church is. Those who believe in the religion wouldn't trade with you, you may be embarrassed, strung up, or burned at the stake.

I also remember a "reincarnation" manga with an old country woman reincarnated (still in modern Japan, more normal interpretation of reincarnation except for remembering her prior life) where she 'kept referring to herself like an old [person] with "ore."' Apparently, that was just how old folks talk in that prefecture.
