Looking back it I have to say I'm not too surprised this got axed - especially if I look at chapters about Kumikas and Chihiros "romance". They're just not that well executed; for some reason although Chihiro has decent reason, motivation and backstory to try to ask Kumika out, it never goes anywhere (well, until the series got the axe and even then it's not that great). I don't understand why it had to be drawn out like this, it's in a Seinen magazine, so the readers maybe even expect them to get together a bit earlier and not fumble around like middleschool kids. The idea behind this manga, as well as it's structure would work just as well if they were dating: Kumika eats something for the first and it's cute - you can do that even without japanese cuisine. I mean, I don't remember different cooking styles coming up, so that had a vast amount of untapped potential - and it could've been something Chihiro is unfamiliar with, too. There's also "alien food" from Chihiros backstory.
Why it never went there, I can only guess and this isn't meant to be rude but: I don't think the mangaka is good at writing adult romance. The whole manga is fluffy and cute, up to the point when the relationship between the two main characters comes up and then the issue is either dodged or it gets awkward. Overall it's very good, but if the author would've executed it better, it could have stuck around, at least in my opinion - and that's why I will say it's a good series, but just not a great one.
