I don't think he's dense. Personally, I think he's aware and actively trying to deflect her while still being decent - maybe because he just wants a bit of company he doesn't have to be so guarded around, and/or he genuinely does like her and doesn't wanna hurt her.

It's all conjecture though. Chances are good I'm just overthinking it.
