You know, I didn't catch it on the first read, but there's an ongoing sound effect from the explosion to the end of the chapter. That's the sound of ears ringing over dead silence commonly seen as 'shell shock' in war movies. The way his scream seems to fade-in at the end points to it. Clever.

Some games have special skills or damage types that can bypass all defense or, at the very least, need dedicated defense.
It would not be too surprising that some monsters above level 100 have such an option.

Either that, or the self-destruct has a major damage increase compared to normal attacks. This also appears in several games.
