Erm, I'm just surprised she wouldn't just leave after explaining that she has a job helping out a family friend or something...but I guess I would get pretty pissed if someone tried to arrange a marriage even after knowing I was gay and treating it as a disease

Ayu is the main character and the aggressor in the relationship so people don't seem to care that she is so much younger. In reality though, she is not an adult, she is a child in an adult relationship with an adult. Those parents are total assholes, but that doesn't absolve Yukari of moral responsibility for her actions.
This. I like the series and im choosing to ignore this clear moral problem in it but if 23yo dated 16yo child in reality i would wish for them to end up in prison or to at least receive some kind of punishment

Folks need to remember that in Japan, the age of consent is 16. Ayu is not legally a minor in Japan.

In general, age of consent laws are a good idea to deter older folks from pursuing younger folks. The younger you are, the less likely you are to have the emotional maturity and experience for a sexual relationship. But "Age of Consent" is not a firm scientific number like the boiling point. Some young people are mature and some older people are not mature enough.

Tho it seemed something bad would happen from the atmosphere of their talk, but even so thats an outcome that felt so fabricated. I mean, what she said about Yukari definitely cause it all. Sure, it could had happen by accident since she was angry, but still, after running away for three months she came back and says shes with an adult to her homophobic parents?
Also, theres plenty of ways to work around their threat, just "i wont come back" and "lets break up" is the most loserish option.
If u think objectively, although are her parents, the whole thing was unnecessary to be dealt with now. The progression as is was good enough for the story. More over, the biggest challenge left was to Yukari stop trying to convince herself shes not madly in love with Ayu. Theres was no need to complicate things like that, mostly since there wouldnt be enough time to solve it and a quick fix now would be just pointless. Anyway, it was great... until now.

A minor can't have consensual sex with an adult, it would be classified as rape (at least in most countries). Not sure if Japan have Romeo and Juliet laws similar to the ones in the US. Also the police usually sides with the legal guardians. Would be pretty funny if she calls the police instead and charges when with physical and psychological abuse in order to have them relinquish their position as guardians :pacman:
Age of consent in Japan is 14

Edit: also, one idiotic drama after the other, that's it for me. Dropped.

I mean if you think about it shes not gay shes just really likes this one person who happens to be female.

Yukari simply hasnt liked anyone so no one made fun of her for being gay. I dont know why she feels that being gay requires being oppressed first.

:pepehmm:

id be way more okay if the dad was unaccepting than saying the weirdest shits like "i'll find a man that is fine even if youre a lesbian"

but ill never understand the japanese POV of not telling things esp the things that are so crucial and could affect the other person. ffs, do they think people are mind readers?

personally when I receive texts that dont have any context or suddenly having a call without any heads-up text is already an anxiety-inducing thing for me.

It depends on locations. some locations is 16. I agree that it's stupid lol.
Age of consent was 13, it go upped to 16 like last year, but because each district had a different law to protect minors it was usually set to 18 (and this varied depending on the relationship of the individuals, like them being married)

And yeah, drop it now since it end next chapter anyway lmao

Ayu makes blunder after blunder here, but I believe her most fatal mistake was letting Miya out of her sight, as an alternative guardian if nothing else, and as Yukari's agent in addition to everything she is. Miya has the most comprehensive outlook of the situation (being Yukari's friend and Ayu's ally), is a functional adult, and still technically a family member to Ayu.

Ayu was definitely not in the position to stand alone.

A lot of people in these comments are acting like Ayu is an innocent child when she’s 17. At that age you can be tried as an adult really easily and in most of the US that’s past the age of consent. At age 17 you can legally join the military.

Some enormous change is not going to happen when she turns 18, that was just an arbitrary number chosen to make things easier for judges and lawyers. People age and mature at slightly different rates, there are definitely some 17 year olds who are more mentally developed than some 18 year olds. Lawyers don’t want to have to deal with the hassle of assessing if every alleged victim is mentally competent enough to consent so they just said fuck it and chose 16 or 17 or 18 as an arbitrary cutoff. I mean do you really think that the human brain matures exactly on your birthday? Why is the age of consent not something like 16.89 or 17.41? Having an age of consent is important, having adults go up to little kids and saying “hey want to play a special game” should definitely not be legal. It’s also important to recognize that age of consent varies widely between jurisdictions and is a bit arbitrary, don’t be too puritanical.

Thanks for the work! And yes, a grown woman who has been dating and doing all else with her GF for months actually thinks she's straight. Just like we thought. That shit makes no sense but the parents were worse, she got told how stupid she is and there's one chapter left, so we'll let it slide.
Wait there’s only one chapter left?

Well I just read the last novel chapter and

Apparently there is no crime if they are in a relationship and it's all consent, plus an engagement is in place. Don't know how true it is though. But the thing that settled this argument actually came after that. I must say the ending feels so comedic, at least to me lol.
This is a yuri manga, there’s no way the mangaka researched into the legal system about the different aspects of relationships..

Well, that was some fucking dumb decision making by Ayu... Miya's not here to help her, she was just a touch too honest with her parents, and she's hiding stuff from Yukari...
Also her parents are so shit, it's almost laughable.
I really loved this serie, and wanted it to last longer... But with the route it took, I'm kinda glad there's only one chapter left.
Thanks for the translation!

Actually it seems they do, at least on the surface.

Cause later Yukari will talk about the partnership law that Japan is pushing (or already active? I don't remember lol).

Anyways, I agree that this last string of drama is pretty stupid. Nothing of this would ever happen, if they communicated probably, Ayu didn't leave to her "home" one last time, or at the very least, didn't spill the beans. I already forgot about the existence of those "parents", then author decided to show them one last time, unredeemable.
