Instead of sadness, I think he felt shock that Mahoro could and is leaving him.I'm a bit confused.
Rei is actually sad about divorcing? I really thought he was meh about his marriage.
I bet it never crossed his mind as a possibility. He thought he could do as he wished, knowingly treating her as a maid, betraying her, lying to her, letting his mother and himself (and probably Rio) verbally cut Mahoro down daily.
Thinking she would never leave because she loved him, he gave her a place to live, and she wanted kids. Desperate, he could only come up with the idea that the chores would be enough to have her reconsider.
He couldn’t convince her and his mother has already left. If he felt sadness, it’s for what he is losing that excludes Mahoro’s love.
