One thing about having the power of a god, but just trying to "enjoy" the world (not intervene with mortal affairs), is that you're still subject to people's whims and all the ugly tendencies of mortal affairs. Returning to the continent Aesir is seeing a very different place than what he left. One in widespread conflict and a powerkeg about to explode. And none of it is a threat to him but it is to those he cares about and he also doesn't see it as his place to turn the world on its head.

What the hell did Kaushman get up to in the last few decades that just ASKING about him gets Aesir put on a hitlist?

Probably nothing much. His designs for magic tools just became a military weapon and the military very realistically doesn't want this information getting out to "enemy states" so they control it. Still incredibly sad for Aesir.

I feel sorry for the guy but at the same time it's actually the best way to deal with things. The guy might've already passed on(if he didn't come up with some formula or technology to live longer) and instead of crying and grieving over his passing he's getting all giddy about his work while he was alive. Celebrate.
