Point: This is basically the Light Novel version of The Quintessential Quintuplets (Gotoubun no Hanayome), lol. The story starts off super similar to the manga, but as it goes on, it starts to branch out, and the drama actually gets really good. At first, I thought it was just going to be a pure fanservice LN because the illustrations are pretty ecchi.
Similarities:
- The MC works a part-time job at the home of four sisters.
- The MC is poor (but used to be rich), while the heroines are from a super wealthy, famous family.
Differences:
- The heroines aren't stupid. They are highly talented in their respective fields—you could even call them geniuses.
- The four girls aren't actually blood relatives; they are all adopted from the same orphanage.
- The MC is also from that exact same orphanage.
The drama is really solid, though the heroines do fall for the MC pretty easily (at least, before you find out the real reason why). The four girls (well, one actually remembers) and the MC all lost their childhood memories of their time together because of some heavy trauma.
Characters:
- MC: Kiminaga Shikimi (2nd-year High School) - An honors student.
- Heroine 1: Kichijoji Ranka (2nd-year High School) - The most popular high school girl on X (Twitter), TikTok, etc.
- Heroine 2: Kichijoji Meru (1st-year High School) - A top-tier pro FPS gamer.
- Heroine 3: Kichijoji Chinana (3rd-year Middle School) - A famous voice actress.
- Heroine 4: Kichijoji Kikuri (3rd-year High School) - A famous illustrator and VTuber.
- MC's Best Friend: Mitaka Matsuba (??????) - There's a massive plot twist with this character at the end.
★ Kiminaga Shikimi is a model student who always ranks first in his school, earning him a full scholarship. One day, he gets called into the principal’s office because he was caught working a part-time job, which is strictly against school rules. He’s facing severe punishment and is even on the verge of being expelled. However, the principal offers him a weird loophole: Shikimi won't be expelled if he agrees to work as a live-in housekeeper at the principal's own residence. Naturally, he’ll still get paid for his work.
★ After school, Shikimi heads straight to the address the principal gave him. It’s located in a high-end luxury tower mansion area, and the specific apartment is a penthouse on the top floor. Since he already has permission, Shikimi just walks right in. His first impression? The place is an absolute pigsty. Hearing a noise in the living room, he goes to check it out—and freezes. He sees a girl bent over, wearing nothing but her underwear. To make things crazier, it’s his classmate, Kichijoji Ranka, the most famous high school girl on social media.
★ Ranka screams at Shikimi, assuming he’s some creepy intruder targeting them. All the screaming brings the other residents rushing down from the second floor. Meru and Chinana demand to know what’s going on, but they don't immediately suspect Shikimi of breaking in. The penthouse has a high-tech auto-lock security system, meaning it’s impossible for anyone to enter unless someone inside unlocks the door. It turns out, their oldest sister, Kikuri, was the one who let him in.
★ Shikimi ends up getting kicked out of the Kichijoji residence that day, but he refuses to give up. He can’t afford to get expelled, and he desperately needs the money to support his struggling family. So, the next day, he shows up again. Ranka hasn't gotten home from school yet, so only Meru, Chinana, and Kikuri are there. Shikimi gets straight to work, cleaning up the massive mess of trash in the living room and kitchen until the place is spotless. When Ranka finally gets home, she’s shocked and immediately tells him to leave. But before he goes, Shikimi cooks a meal for all four of them. (Well, technically three, since Kikuri never leaves her room and only communicates through a screen using her VTuber avatar). Meru and Chinana absolutely love his cooking and instantly agree to hire him as their housekeeper. Ranka, however, has too much pride and still demands he leave. She only changes her tune when her sisters explain that Shikimi is forced to work to support his family, even risking expulsion. Hearing that, Ranka finally caves and lets him stay.
★ After giving Ranka his phone number and email to share with the other sisters, Shikimi receives a mysterious message from an unknown address. The email contains an old photo of him back at the orphanage, surrounded by a young Ranka, Meru, and Chinana. The message simply reads: "I hope you choose me this time."
◇ Since this gets super long, let's jump straight into the main routes for each heroine:
1. Kichijoji Chinana
Chinana blew up and became a famous voice actress after her debut role in the anime
Inochi Uta no Ludia. Despite her young age, she was hailed as a genius whose talent rivaled veteran voice actors. However, Chinana believes her success was purely luck, unlike her sisters who possess genuine, undeniable talent. In her mind, a true "genius" is someone who works incredibly hard behind the scenes to achieve their goals, without ever bragging about their effort—which she feels she doesn't do. To her, the proof is that since her debut, she’s only been landing minor, side-character roles.
Shikimi opens up to her about his past. He explains that he grew up in the orphanage because his birth parents couldn't care for him. He was eventually adopted by a wealthy businessman who planned to make Shikimi the heir to his company. But the company went bankrupt, and the family lost everything. Shikimi had to study like crazy just to earn his scholarship so he wouldn't have to pay for school. He tells Chinana that for someone like him who has no natural talent, the only way to get what you want is to fight tooth and nail for it. He encourages her to keep pushing and never give up.
Shikimi’s kindness and genuine support cause Chinana to fall for him. (Well, technically, she’s loved him since they were kids, but she forgot because all their memories from the orphanage were sealed away).
2. Kichijoji Meru
Meru is a pro FPS gamer who frequently competes in national tournaments. She barely ever goes to school because she games all night and sleeps all day. Since her adoptive mother is the school principal, she gets a free pass on attendance, but she is still required to keep her test scores above average. Shikimi is tasked with tutoring her so she doesn't fail her upcoming exams.
Meru reveals that when she was little, she had to move to Korea with her adoptive mother. She struggled to fit in with the kids there. The culture was different; after school, kids mostly spent their time playing online games. The only friend she managed to make invited her to play, making gaming her only real way to socialize. Over time, she played so much that her skills skyrocketed, eventually turning her into a pro.
During a study session, Shikimi casually remarks that she’s amazing at games because she’s a "genius." Meru looks deeply hurt and calls him "Stupid" (in Korean). After that, she starts locking herself in her room, actively avoiding him, and even breaks their promise to meet and study at the school library.
Not knowing when he’ll actually see her, Shikimi asks her mom for permission to sleep over at their house so he can stay up and ambush Meru when she inevitably comes to the kitchen in the middle of the night. He sacrifices his own sleep to tutor her on
her schedule, never once forcing her to quit gaming, because he understands that gaming is the most precious thing in her life. One night, while studying in her room, Shikimi falls asleep. Meru moves him to her bed and ends up sleeping right next to him. When Shikimi wakes up the next morning, Meru’s face is right in front of his. She says good morning, leans in, and kisses him!
3. Kichijoji Ranka
Ranka asks Shikimi to make her a slightly fancy breakfast just so she can take a picture of it and post it on her X account. She’s the type of girl who constantly uploads her daily life on X and TikTok to farm likes and boost her popularity. At first, it was just a casual post, but her fans and classmates mistakenly assume
she cooked it. They start praising her as the "perfect high school girl" who can do it all. The validation goes to her head, and she craves more. She begs Shikimi to make specific dishes for her content, promising it’ll be a "one-time thing." Shikimi warns her that she’s basically lying to her fans, but he reluctantly agrees. Of course, it doesn't stop there—she keeps begging him to do it for weeks.
Eventually, Shikimi snaps. He refuses to keep cooking fake content for her social media. Ranka gets desperate and tries to force him, even going as far as using her feminine charm to try and seduce him into doing it. This makes Shikimi absolutely furious. He knows Ranka actually hates men, so the fact that she’d use her body to manipulate a guy when she’s cornered disgusts him. He yells at her, calling her cheap. After that blowout, their relationship turns ice-cold. While Shikimi acts completely normal around her sisters, he blatantly distances himself from Ranka, causing her to isolate herself in her room.
Unable to stand seeing her depressed, Shikimi eventually drags her out of her room and confiscates her phone for an entire day. He doesn't want her stressing out over negative comments online. He takes her out on a one-on-one date to clear her head (you’ll have to read the details yourself!). Thanks to his tough love and genuine kindness, Ranka ends up falling hard for him.
4. Kichijoji Kikuri
Kikuri is the oldest of the sisters, and here is the craziest plot twist: she is actually the MC's "best friend" (Mitaka Matsuba), who has secretly been feeding him information about the Kichijoji sisters whenever he needed it! She is also the
only character who remembers their past from 7 years ago when all five of them were at the orphanage.
Shikimi originally assumes Kikuri was the one who sent him that old photo via email, but it turns out it wasn't her. After analyzing the photo’s angles, the sunlight, and how it was taken, he realizes the picture was actually taken from
Meru’s room.
Kikuri has been deeply in love with the MC since they were kids. The photo actually belonged to her, but she threw it away after finally reuniting with him. The whole reason she became an illustrator—and kept the exact same art style she had as a kid—was in the desperate hope that it would lead her back to him.
Kikuri’s route easily has the best drama in the series, but it's too long to detail here, so you'll have to read it!
By the end of Volume 1, the mystery of who actually sent the email is still unsolved, and it’s still totally unknown which girl the MC will ultimately choose.
