they've given the reason, it's just a shallow, trite, cliched one. His wife/her mom died and he couldn't handle it, so whenever she did anything that reminded him of the wife (like made food that she made) he would just get angry and lash out and over time he became bitter and violent enough that it was all he had left.

It's a trash reason that doesn't have enough real justification or depth, but it is there.
It's a trash reason that sadly is a very real thing that happens. I had a friend who had to be rescued from a very similar situation by her aunt. I wanted to beat her father with my baseball bat when i found out about it.

a bit diappointed to see just how cartoonishly villainous the dad is. knowing that he used to be a decent dad doesnt really do enough to justify his bad behavior, if anything it makes his prideful boasting about his abuse seem even more silly and unrealistic. the story so far has always had some issues with its writing but this is probably the most sloppily written bit just for the sake of shock value and drama

still entertaining though. beat his ass mc-kun
This is realistic tho. If you deem it silly you are pretty ignorant to the real life. Never underestimate people who got mental problem (in this case the dad). It usually occure in the place that have drunk culture, smoking drugs, or apathetic society. Their logic is twisted and can be pretty smart at looking the hole of the law to do bad thing (they disguised it as if he is a good people)

You say cartoonishly villainous i say just slighty unrealistic a lot of people are way worse, i know of multiple people who suffered way worse than just violent beatings (not to downplay it).

You might just be used (not trying to insult you) to manga were everyone talk together, they shout loudly maybe some punches are exchanged and everything is solved and the day after we act like nothing happened because we dont want to bring "shame to the family". Japan is kinda of a fucked up country when it comes to this kind of issues where a person needs exterior help to get protected.
It happened about 20 years ago or more, primary school student ran away from home and spent few days wandering around the city, it happened twice.

There weren't any signs of mistreatment, neither was social or talkative. No bullying, grades were fine.

Family ran a garment accessories shop and was living well enough to be mid-high class. City was well known for its textile products.

After 2nd escape, frew weeks later was found in the enclosed forest reserve within city limits.

After graduating and going to university, while driving through old neighborhood, found their luxury house in total mess. Asked around just to found out her parents broke up, father was accused of DA and attempted murder on wife few years ago...

Not trying to pin a tail, might develop his misbehaviour after tragic loss of his daughter, but...

Dude after seeing that, if that was me it would not end with a haymaker. Not until the cops pulled me off whatever was left of him.

That you end it there shows that you didn't pay enough attention. He then, AFTER her death, lost the only thing that he could channel himself into and have pride in- his career in baseball. So not only did he lose the love of his life, thanks to the actions of their daughter (which is unfortunately true, even if she shouldn't be blamed for not really understanding things at that age such that it ended up that way), but he also lost the only thing he could channel himself into. That doesn't excuse what he did or how, not one bit, but it does show how much of a sad, pathetic cowardly pile of shit he is, broken twice over and then taking it out on her because he blames the downward spiral of his life as beginning with her getting his wife killed.
