@onlysaneone this guy does a nice chapter by chapter review. I think he started during the Valentine day arc or the kyoto arc. Not sure but it's very current. http://toonstarterz.tumblr.com/tagged/watamote-review

@Swifft glad someone else loved the actual char development and literally god tier story progression, i was afraid the comment section was gonna be "haha shes cringe XD" or something. This is honestly one of the most realistic and well done manga i've ever read.

a great realistic portrayal of the growth of a paranoid anti social person and the relationships she manages to forge one unconventional way or another. as someone who used to have a similar mindset as tomoko, this made me cry quite a lot

@VoidR I'd say most people who like the series as it currently is really like the character development. Part of the reason I wrote that was since most reviews for this series... if not all (I couldn't find any that weren't) were about the earlier chapters, when it was almost purely cringe comedy or self-deprecating.

Shit. It's so obvious that the author are tying up loose ends with these latest chapters.
The manga is going to end soon, isn't it?

Please tell me i'm wrong.

@Arashiyama I don't believe it will end that soon (hopefully), but I think they are preparing the settings for college arc where probably friends and love-yandere-likes and stalkers as well as harassed girl/friend will be getting changes, kinda like a Katou "route", perhaps even yuu going same college as Tomo-chan or even she will become a true harem master such as "Keima Katsuragi" or "Bakaterina" or who knows!! So let's not think that actually it will end o_<

@wizardrone my bad, its not a tweet but an interview
https://pastebin.com/UwaeaG1y (if you want to read the whole interview)
line 62 and 63
We think “I understand Tomoko’s feelings a bit.” is enough. At least not “I’m not related with Tomoko at all.” The story completes by Tomoko being alone -Tanigawa Nico
so whether you like it or not she'll end up as a loner again in the end (wich i think is a great ending that stays true to the premise)

@oginohusband well yeah, but you are half right, since the interview it's from 2013 and its seems at that time they wanted for tomoko to be someone that fights alone, but differs from the current Tomo-chan but certainly it could have an unexpected end but I still bet for a non-solo ending.

@wizardrone nah dude you should reread this manga atleast 20 times or more. nico's are someone who's fond of detail, many of character already introduces circa 2013. while they're only a minor character at first but nico already foreshadow their relevancy back then. this picture is one of many chapter that proof my point, and this chapter if i remember is uploaded early 2013.

Thanks for sharing that interview it’s an interesting read. Still, since it is from 2013, two years before the Kyoto arc (aka Yuri and Masaki introduction) I would take the claims of the ending with a grain of salt. As the writer states:

“When we had not decided the direction of this manga, I tried to make a new character who approaches to Tomoko. But it did not go well and I quit. Watamote is the manga that its story completes by Tomoko alone.”

They are probably referring to Nemo in Ch. 39. It didn’t work out with Nemo (at least the first time) but the introduction of new characters worked with Kotomi (sort of) and especially with intro to Yuri and Masaki during Kyoto arc. In other words if there’s an interesting story to tell they were willing to introduce new characters that could be potential friends. Over the last 5 years they’ve been able to do that, therefore we can perhaps believe that their thought on the ending itself has changed since this 2013 interview.

TLDR:
Let’s try not to make too many doomsday declarations about the end and instead enjoy the ride!

One thing is for sure. The mangakas can be bitterly ironic, but they're not nihilists. If Tomoko ends up alone, she'll have moved forward; she's not going back to the starting point.

I think that a sad ending would, most likely, be Tomoko back with only Koto and Yuu and (of course) Kii.

The fact is that even under the best circumstances, most friendships vanish with the end of high school, with the former friends sometimes becoming new sorts of friends. The question is whether Tomoko actually loses her friends, as in a chain reaction from telling Nemo that hers was a pretty pink color, or Asuka mysteriously proving to be not so great, or Yuri's neuroses finally driving her back further into a hole, etc.

Personally, I don't think it will end up badly.
