“We conclude that it may well be that he had some justification for his worry about his offspring. But it’s not all genetic doom and gloom – three of his sons were so prominent that they were knighted by Queen Victoria for their achievements.”

The research is published in the current issue of the journal BioScience.

Darwin himself was sickly, and contemporary researchers have theorized that he suffered from Chagas disease inflicted by insects in South America during his voyage on the HMS Beagle.

He obsessively logged information about his own health, which may have influenced his interest in his children’s health, Berra said. But he also recognized from his botanical research that the long tradition of intermarriage between the Darwins and the Wedgwoods – a common practice among prominent families in Victorian England – might have had the unintended consequence of harming the health of his children.

Darwin’s third child, Mary Eleanor, lived for only 23 days and died in 1842 of an unknown cause. Annie, his first daughter and second child, died in 1851, and his last child, Charles Waring, died at 18 months of scarlet fever in 1858.

oh I see, well my friend the situation in my country is similar to India I guess, as I said before the law is so lax toward this thing that it literally says that if the two persons (persons is a real word) are adults then it is totally ok, and people generally won't judge you for banging your cousin, they would found just a bit weird, especially if you are going to live on a big city but not much of a deal. Now is universal that if you bang your daughter or your sister you probably gonna be lynched by the population, because even if it is not on the law, it is not that morally acceptable banging relatives that close. So in the end is basically: bang your cousin is fine, but your close family isn't.

In the current state of genetic engineering and machine learning, I believe we will likely solve the issue with birth defects in less than 20 years even without doing any extra research/work specifically for incest.

Once this time comes (def not there yet), I personally believe all reasons to stop them are void so long as they allow whatever dna correction procedures to be done to the child, which will likely be part of standard procedures in 30-40 years.

Scientifically, I imagine the knowledge necessary is likely a prerequisite to completion of a full transgender transformation. Which I believe we are actively researching. To my current understanding as someone not even remotely interested in the field, we already have the tools for fixing these defects. Its just knowledge of what all needs fixing that we are lacking (dna is complex)

In other words, I think in a few years this question will have to be revisited on a global scale for all levels of incest. Gonna be hard since we have heavily ingrained NO in everyone's mind, but the reason given is about to unexpectedly expire.

My bet is that, once we get there, cousins will be legalized in all countries within a few decades. Siblings will be a hard fight to win because of the existing stigma... if media decides too heavily reinforce the stigma then it will remain banned for generations. If not, we will have a mixed bag of laws between countries.
But by god I hope parental is never legalized. We don't need to add direct grooming into the mix that this hellhole will bring about.
Uncles and aunts is questionable. Since... I have a friend with an aunt who is younger than him. When there is no age gap or potential birth issues, I have no stigma against it....

As for my personal stance. I don't understand love, so if siblings manage to feel that way I don't want to stop them. So once the science gets there I would be on the defending side.... or not. Defending sounds like a pain. I'll probably be watching whatever replaces YouTube

Anyone disturbed by anything I said, don't worry, it wont last long. WW4 will be fought with sticks and stones after all

I might be wrong, but wasn't marriage and by extension incest legal in some states in US under some conditions?
Like heterosexual couples both being over 65(?) also think I have seen old sisters that got married - also on the older side.

In Czech Republic, where I live, I THINK that cousin marriage was legal.
Also have vague recollection of it being legal in Japan as long as the two are removed by at least 3 steps on family tree. In case of cousins it would be:
starting point -> person A
1st step -> his parent
2nd step -> his parent's sibling (aunt/uncle)
3rd step -> his parent's sibling's child (cousin)

I personally don't really care as long as both are adults, know what they're getting into and don't have kids.
So if both have their doctors do the snippy snip, they can f*ck their brains out for all I care.

Also when it is between siblings that are not blood related, I think it is still illegal when they grew up in the same home.
Though I don't really know why, I live in quite small village (less than 2k people) and it is normal to marry somebody you know your entire life... also it being small place most of the people are vaguely related... the village is around since around 12th century s maybe that has something to do with it...

I swore that society and social norms/teachings were what made people not be attracted to relatives and/or siblings, not genetics - can't remember where exactly, but I swear I read some sort of article on how people are attracted to similarities within themselves;
I was about to get into another country's laws, such as Japan, but I'm mostly seeing US and not much else, so consider my tongue held.

After watching some tv shows (mainly GOT) and some Incest manga, my views on Incest change drastically. Take for instance this manga , both siblings like each other and love each other. Are they not allowed to love each other just because they are siblings?

And I believe that in the future with genetic modification, Incest couple could have a baby without genetic defects. Genetic modification

Wait Wait, what the Fuck? Ngl, I have spent my entire childhood in India ( I am half- Indian) And I haven't seen or heard a single case of Incest in India. India is a very a religious country and since my mother is hindu, I can confirm Hinduism doesn't allow Incest, What are you saying Thread Poster?

All this is reminding me of this recent story where an adopted girl and this boy found out they were long-lost siblings - after they had already fallen in love and did the deed, idr if they had a child or not - but... yeah.

Shit happens.

From where I am from, people do marry their cousins and its very very very common. I always personally found it quite disgusting, but they don't seem to care.

I believe Thomas Sowell was spot on when he said that people have the unfortunate tendency to be swayed by short term thinking and sweet words. People love the idea of something in the now but never really think about the wider repercussions on the long term scale. We've SEEN what large, wide scale incest does to a population over time. It isn't good. It literally kills the population from the inside out. Outbreeding (non-incest) was the only solution. Even from what we've researched on it's usage in population management with animals, inbreeding depression is constant throughout the population (regardless of size), resulting in weaker offspring with higher mortality rates across the board.

But people tend to be swayed by the idea that "they're in love!" or "They're adults they should do what they want!" and look the other way. However it is that kind of thinking that causes these populations to end up dead. At a certain point you have to ask what the long term ramifications of a decision looks like and then ask if it's worth actually allowing someone to do it, because humans don't exist in a vacuum. Ideas spread, decisions spread and you have to ask if it's worthwhile saying "it's ok" in the short term while ignoring a possible long term detriment.

Most people would call this having a "Moral Backbone" which apparently is a scary thing to people nowadays.

Sure love and all. But if they're gonna have kids.. Yikes
Kind of selfish of them to bear a child with genetic diseases.

There's moral backbone
Then there's being politically correct 25/8

Can you tell the difference?

So I followed the thread from the start and most if not all those in the against incest camp are giving the genetic birth defects reason, however I want to steer the conversation to the other side, suppose there were no such defects then how would your views on incest change? I also find it disgusting and immoral but why is that? When I question myself the only thing I can think of is that I'd never want to do such a thing with a family member but why exactly is it so morally wrong? I think the main reason is because of how society views incest and the fact that we view it as abnormal. If we lived in a world where incest wasn't condemned I wonder if my views would be different(given the premise that there are no defects) . I still firmly stand against incest but I believe it isn't something that we should outright condemn.
