Most works of literature sort of assume you've read other things first. Lots of western stuff assumes the Bible, most of Isekai is semi-based on Narnia and Tolkien, etc.

That's fine reading Japanese manga. For the most part they've been so heavily influenced by western culture that lot of it is fine to just pick up and go.

Chinese and Korean stuff isn't nearly as easy to get into. Cultivation is almost never explained, and characters often display absurd amounts of loyalty and/or obey the undescribed class structures to a fault, and don't get me started on disjointed symbolism, like white meaning death and evil.

If I were looking for something to get started on, where should I go? I've been really enjoying Peerless Dad because the main character is just as clueless as I am about Murim as I am, but everything else I've tried just drowns me in random power levels and namedropping.
