Oh, so he's just going to be a comically bad husband.

Has been the entire time?

ETA: just to clarify in light of Nosebleed's comment, he's been consistently portrayed as a bad husband who is perfectly content with the status quo.

What use does the author have for a GPS tracker?
Research for this story, but a lot of people put them in luggage, especially checked luggage.

As simple as Rei is Its funny that he has more character than 90% of the females in a male version of this story. You know the ones, "My wife cheated on me with my playboy co-worker but thankfully I'm the best in my field and have a lot of money and these highschool girls keep coming to my house to take care of me."

I don't mean to be condescending, but I genuinely envy you if you have never encountered guys like Rei in real life.
The fact you think he is being portrayed in a comical way and not... in the way husbands like him in real life act literally all the time, I can only deduce you have led a very fortunate life.

Consider reading Why Does He Do That? by Lundy Bancroft. One of the more elucidating and well known books on the subject matter, particularly for people who are very unaware about these types of scenarios and why men like Rei behave the way they do, and how to properly identify them.

If you don't have the time, the short I Want a Wife manifesto by Judy Brady is also a nice portrayal of the toxic male mentality, though less of a study and more just a general expose of the kind of vitriol wives have to put up with.

Jesus putting a gps tracker on ur husband.

Yeah nah. Rei can tell his wife is definitely different from before and is probably not gonna revert anytime soon of ever. I fully expect him to go total "You wanna make my life harder instead of telling me what's bothering you? Two can play at that game" mode.

Now im wanting Rei to get divorced from Mahoro at this point. Imagine if he was able to show all this "She invaded my phone, she stalked me from home when I went out, she put a gps tracker on me!"

Edit: Oh wow I posted twice. And now just realizing there is no delete comment feature wtf lol.

Should've apologized to Mahoro about the coffee at least Rei, you did tell her to make it.

But i do find it funny Mahoro wanted Rei to tell her in advance about eating out(which normal people should do btw), when she literally doesnt tell Rei about anything thats bugging her. Communicate to me but not for thee!

Violations of trust/privacy are categorically worse than laziness anyday of the week imo

Honest to God rei might be the worst husband ever but Mahoro is being just as awful. She actively saw her husband turn down an affair, and the condoms in the bag could've been from whatever that fat lady's name is. Her husband isn't sleeping with her? Better not have an adult conversation better just bottle it up and explode with malice the split second a trigger comes your way. Digging through his phone is whatever people get nosy but gps tracking him because you're too immature to have a conversation is beyond baffling. If he finds out he could easily file for a divorce and get an upper leg on her.

I watched my two sister’s first marriages end in divorce. One was married to a controlling asshole, the other to an incompetent man-child.

At least the asshole made it highly evident that he was an asshole, and the marriage ended after a few years. I can’t help but feel like she was the lucky one.

The sister married to the man-child had 3 children and years upon years before finally yanking the cord on the marriage (and even then, was still heavily involved in her life up until a few years ago).

You may think Rei is “Comically Bad”; that’s fine, you’re entitled to think so as a reader. My personal experiences with people like Rei is that they do everything within their power to cling to what they’ve gotten their hands on. I wouldn’t be surprised as the series goes on and we witness weaponized incompetence.

That's the point - @Nosebleed added a helpful translation note about how difficult it is to get a divorce in Japan because they don't have no fault: https://mangadex.org/chapter/913455a4-2e06-4092-a11e-1499582f47b4/17

Rei probably doesn't want a divorce, he likes having unpaid domestic labor he can mostly ignore. Mahoro though wants out and needs all her ducks in a row to get Rei or a Family Court judge to agree to grant her a divorce.

Asking MC to make a coffee and then instantly pouring it into the sink without even taking a sip is a pretty comical way to portray how bad he, at least to me

I have seen some phone apps (i guess it might be noticeable but i wouldn't be surprised if there was spyware easy to hide or cloning something), remember seeing a tracker ppl can attach to kids backpacks but abuse aside , feels like it might be useful for some younger kids but other than them running away or for some reason not being in school there wouldn't be a need to, although it'd be good to emphasize a kid or have it be a bracelet/necklace they always wear and hope they don't do a stupid 'kid' thing like give it to their friend/trade it away/etc

Asking for drip coffee and then pouring it out seems like a dick move i assume most offices have a coffee maker or he can just go to a starbucks (unless it's ridiculously overpriced there too)

hes jsut goong to convenient not bring his backpack tomorrow

Assuming it's his work bag he probably has to/can't really put it on something like his tie/pocket lol
What use does the author have for a GPS tracker? :thonk:

It would be interesting if they were that dedicated to 'research' but imagine if it's like based on their own story/friends anecdotes

I had a boss like this 🙃

I thought it was a pretty good way to show how controlling Rei can get - pouring it into the sink expecting she won't say anything is pure power move.

Petty acts like that are a staple of abusive partners. The tactic is to thread the line such that you make your partner think they're the ones being petty for pointing out misbehavior, with the ultimate goal being to coerce and control them.

He made Mahoro make him a coffee in a way that takes time (dripped coffee requires some extra prep) to prove the point that she's too busy and should quit, because that's what he thinks and wants her to do, and the reason he discarded the coffee like that is because he never cared for the coffee to begin with, it was just an excuse to make Mahoro suffer more. It's textbook controlling behavior grounded in a very realistic example.

This is very, very common. It is not comical or unrealistic at all. If you ever met narcissists like Rei in real life you'd know.
