So he needed a horse because he WASNT in a rush. There would've been a way to break through sooner if he used magic, but a horse let him get to a secluded area without looking strong.

And since he so obviously wasted money on charity, for them to go through with it made it unlikely the assassins were anyone worth keeping alive.

He's gonna leave one alive to report back isn't he
I mean if he can use some kind of magic to instill servitude he could leave one alive, send him to report that it was a tough battle/he is alone and the rest of the squad resting and that the old man is dead. But experience tells me he either kills everyone or leaves one to send a message

Killing all the assassins is effectively the same as leaving one alive. If none of them report back then it implies he's strong enough to kill them all.
a good counterplay is simply making their corpses easy to discover and aperently the deaths either look like accident or robbery. wont buy much time though, and would only work once at best.

But what was the real question? I'm guessing it was along the lines of who he was asking to take care of the horse.

Assassins attack some nosy middle-aged guy, and decide they need to kill him because he knows too much. Middle-aged guy reveals he's actually a one-man army, and decides he needs to wipe out the assassins because they know too much. Satisfying. It's got a certain poetry to it.

If he keeps using that royal pass people would know where he was anyway. I’m not sure if he wants the kingdom to think that he’s dead or not. If he just wanted to disappear he never would have gone looking for a horse in the first place, so clearly he’s got something in mind…

Maybe he just wants to keep the princess preoccupied with worrying about what he’s doing in order to distract her?
