Why didn't he just establish a council on top of the three dukes, put the dukes in the council but stuff it with loyal promoted officers from lower levels? The dukes get to keep their roles and titles but it would be de facto subsumed by the council as a whole, especially over time.
Case in point, see the central military commissions established by communist states (esp. PRC and NK) to keep party control over the army.

Also the former king not cooperating is very strange and definitely makes the situation a lot harder than it needs to be. He doesn't even need to do anything of actual substance, he simply needs to be present at meetings or give occasional speeches and visitations stating his confidence in the new king.

I will say Licia cutting her hair off to symbolise throwing away her feminity for the sake of her country, is at least a better representation of the trope , than what most manga do with it

"Oh the boy who you fell in love had rejected you in favour of another girl, well better chop Off those locks , clearly they were the culprit all along"
THAT MAKES NO FREAKING SENSE

Generally hair cutting represents a wish for a change in lifestyle, or a difference from one's old self. It's similar to divorced women replacing or rearranging the furniture and decor in their home if they don't move out.

You just don't want to be that person with that mindset anymore, so you do something big and drastic as a physical representation of a fresh new start, or of having moved on.

By the way, hair for women is a big fucking deal. They'll cry for a week straight over a botched haircut.

@AbuHajaar He's at odds with the Dukes because he doesn't want the army to be led by a committee. He wants a proper chain of command. A bigger committee isn't the solution. Plus, the Dukes were already disobedient before he brought that up - I don't see how your idea'd have helped.

There has to be some fuckery that hasn't been revealed yet with George. Like he's a secret double agent so deep that even his allies didn't know.

I'll be impressed at how fucking stupid and short sighted this guy is, if that was his genuine reason for starting a war.

@AlmondMagnum What he is doing is horrible politics and organization. A proper chain of command is not what he suggests. One person cannot react to everything at once. A proper chain of command is distributed, with multiple flexible centers so that losing a commander isn't a fatal blow and so troops can respond to changes in the local battlespace quickly.

The airborne guy points out the problem correctly. They are disobient for a good reason, and his actions to centralize power without giving them proper concessions and oversight of reforms is just a bad deal for them. If he went by stuffing the ranks with promoted loyalists he avoids giving them a cause for direct conflict and also establishes an intelligence network into the ranks of the Duke's armies. Hell, he should have done a one on one meeting with each Duke first, because he cuts their combibed negotiating power by a third, and can broker individual deals.

MC is full of shit. Someone already pointed out the flaw of his centralized authority idea and quoting Machiavelli and claiming there won't be a problem because he will deposed if he abandons the people is a load of bullshit that ignores the existance of every single demagogue through history who showed a front of altruism and patriotism while using propaganda and other tools to fool the people into not realizing he was a corrupt asshole.

It's not like his ideas are objectively bad, it's just that he does a very poor job at explaining them.

It's clearly not intended as such, but everything about this situation feels like an argument for actual parliamentary democracy where all of their factions have proper representation.
