Y'all are missing the point. The MC wasn't equating their actions at all, and he fully believed the rapist was the worse person by virtue of being a rapist. He realises that, regardless of the other dude being worse, he's still being irresponsible by shouldering her burdens. He's a good person for doing so, but it's irresponsible and it can't last forever. He doesn't have a plan, and there are certainly going to be situations where it's going to be bad for him (such as if she's unemployed). She's not his daughter, and he can't treat her like she is because that will only cause problems for both of them.

tl;dr he's not thinking he's as bad as a rapist, he just realises he's being irresponsible by helping Sayu.

I'm sitting here going, "does this blonde guy really believe the shit that comes out of his mouth"? and then the protag is all like "what he says is true" and my mind just went blank.

She's still a damn child whether or not she got herself involved in some really adult matters. Someone helping a child get on their feet when they fall is a totally normal behavior if you're not a piece of shit and have the means to do so. At no point has MC ever insinuated he's going to babysit her for the rest of her life, and she's making progress by having a job, etc. If anything could hinder that progress it's shit like her former rapist showing up at her place of work and making it an unsafe and generally uncomfortable work environment.

I don't think he's really being that irresponsible. If she's making progress, what else should he do? Turn her over to the state? I guess that's the "society is always right and never fails anyone" answer, but is that really going to help her? When assuming we go at her word, her parents don't really want anything to do with her? I'm not really familiar with the Japanese welfare system so I can't speak on what they would do for her. Maybe it's the cushiest of situations and she'd love it. But since she's made a concerted effort to be on her own, it doesn't seem like that's going to be a great answer for her.

@nazukixkurumi in my case it would be someone who resembles the stereotypical good representation of what a good man should be e.g strong of mind and body, confident, leader etc. He probably IS sexually active purely because these are all attractive traits and wouldn't have a problem with finding women.
