Ah no, they do matter. Do you consider someone killing out of self defence the same as someone that killed to rob a store?

You can't really have accountability if you don't even understand what's going on with Yami.
Self-defense is already a reaction in the moment to an action being taken against you. The person who started that learned the meaning of accountability, you will still have to go through proper investigation and legal procedures though. And before you try to jump to another line of thinking, killing by accident counts as murder and will get you in jail, maybe with a reduced sentence, but still gets you there.

Consequences not intended by Ayami were still caused by her, and while they might the reason "why," they don't justify making further bad decisions.

No killing by accident is manslaughter and treated differently from murder. It's why mens rea is important to establish. But that's besides the point.

I'm not arguing against whether yami deserves blame, I just don't see her actions being worthy of the level of hate people like to say they have for her.

Those people would cut her off of their lives right away after dealing with her shit, that's what they mean. We're talking about a character that's all flaws to the point of being a pitybait meme worth of being in series like Deep Love and only showed a single virtue so far by having some filial piety for her mom. I say "some" here because it was worth as much as seeing Yuu again and immediately walking back on that decision.

I've seen this argument of "it's okay for characters to act inconsistently due to humans being irrational at times"

This is such a cheap cope out to defend poor writing. I'm not going to write a character acting inconsistently and just chalk it up to them being "irrational". It's lazy. Its like watching people defend Holdo's actions in the Last Jedi as "character acting inconsistently due to irrational nature of human beings". Oh, okay. You telling me a character described as a supposed leader, all of a sudden having a Homer Simpson moment? No, it only serves to yank me out of the story, and make me wish someone else was handling the plot and the world. These characters and this iteration of a story only have one shot at being created in their current form, and I hate it seeing both good characters and good story ideas completely fall apart due to poor execution.

I think the characters are written fairly consistently - Aya makes impulsive, irrational but rational to her self-destructive choices to avoid emotional damage, Yuu hedges his bets by not going all in on studying for the exam or Aya or Hikari, and Hikari is quite explicitly their contrast in that she goes all in on school and friends and pursuing Yuu (she initiates dates and hanging out) & this is maybe the doesn't back down from Aya's attitude arc.

ETA: granted, it makes it hard to root for anyone and I'm curious how this gets to a satisfying ending, but also the kiss climax is kinda the test of whether Aya and Yuu have grown. Does he make an active choice, does she stay and have the fight?

Nobody brought up inconsistency. The author has shown how Yami's upbringing resulted in her making rash decisions.

a supposed leader
Who are you talking about here?
Yami's action might seem inconsistent to many people, but for someone who is in her shoes, her action makes total sense to me to be honest.

The only good ship for Yami is YamixAGoodTherapist. Yami and Yuu really aren’t good for each other, plus Hikari definitely deserves better than friends with the girl who betrayed her
Yami and Yuu have more chemistry in 2 chapters than the entire arc of Hikari tbh. Hikari is so bland I literally forgot what is special about her aside from the Osananajimi stereotype.

It looks that way because they speedran their romance arc, something Hikari hasn’t gotten yet. Hikari and Yuu are clearly very comfortable with each other (HUGE in a stable relationship), she’s a sweet girl who brings out the better sides of Yuu. She genuinely cares for the people around her and is motivated. She’s a bit airheaded, easily flustered and a little immature but that has been shown to bring out the best even in a misanthrope like Yami.

In contrast Yami is fickle, self-centered, and has been shown to frequently make Yuu feel nervous that she’ll leave or is being insincere. When he finally seems to get comfortable she yanks the ground out from under him to throw herself a pity party. Yami’s strong points are… she’s clever? That’s really it. She gets what she wants when she isn’t busy self-destructing but even her “selfless” actions are motivated out of self-sabotage rather than actually wanting to help.

Hikari seems “dull” because her competition is a walking wall of red flags. Yes Yuu has a complex about not being able to measure up to Hikari, but Hikari’s response wasn’t to say, hard Ghost him so she could “set him free” because she doesn’t think she deserves him.

Tl;dr Hikari seems dull because she’s a positive force in peoples lives which is less interesting than Yami the emotional vampire.

If you have major past with a person you’re best friends with is in love with, you owe to them to at least summarize things. Best case scenario if you don’t you could end up with misunderstanding that hurt your relationships. Worst case you end up with… this mess. She was scared to make things a little tense between the three so she ended up EXPLODING things between the three.

I’m not saying she should give a blow by blow of blowing Yuu but at least some perspective like “we dated in the past, it was a bad breakup.” And then Hikari can chose how to proceed. Instead she left her in the dark in a situation where things could easy end with betraying her completely.

Yami only worries about Yami.
bruh, Yami found out that the one Hikari likes is Yuu only at the last minute, literally right when Yuu came to her school. She never knew about him beforehand, Hikari never told her his full name or picture.

Actually no, per the light novel (written concurrently with the manga) Yami has know since around the time the girls watched the fireworks from her apartment. So MONTHS.

That's incorrect. Chapter 13.5 specifies that Yami found out shortly after seeing Yuu's name in the group chat in chapter 11, so she knew about it for 3 months. I did a second-hand translation of the Spanish version of the chapter. You can also check out the novel version of the chapter.

Looks like the friendship arc between Hikari and Yami will begin. It will make the betrayal in chapter 21 sting worse for the both of them. But I can't wait to see their friendship blossom. And shame Yami broke up with Yuu for nothing in the end. I also wish the TL Group had kept the first page and not ignored it.
They bring my girl back after a dozen chapters only to hurt her further

I will ask you too. What should Hikari do when she hears that? As a friend to Yami.

It's not about what Hikari should do it's about having the choice of making a decision in the first place.

Hikari isn't able to make a decision of if she wants to be with Yuu or even be friend's with Yami because not all available knowledge is given to her.

You're asking the wrong question here.

You really need to stop acting like it's insane to think humans don't always act in the most rational manner at all times. Your reply reads like you want an excuse to hate Yami. No shit she could have done things differently but it's a leap to hate her over it.

So because people don't act rationally they are somehow excused from fault? Kinda backwards ass logic is that.

I don't need an excuse to hate Yami, ger actions hurt people intentionally or not and even if not rational it's something that we know she's capable of understanding.

rather then having an excuse to her hate her the author is trying to make excuses as to why we shouldn't, and quite frankly his excuses fail.

If y'all like her that's fine but I can guarantee you wouldn't want someone like her in your real life and you wouldn't have sympathy for her if you were in this situation.
