Except for the fact that the person being transported through the tunnel is supposed to be somewhere that takes a month to get to, her getting back the next day would be plenty suspicious. People at the guild will notice a person that is attending academy a month travel away is reporting quest completions every week. The guards will also log and notice the weekly entrance/departures. When they come investigating and find the unauthorized tunnel, they'll jail Miyabi as Liz pointed out when the whole tunnel idea was conceived (the whole reason he's asking permission to begin with).
That will only happen if someone is constantly keeping track of them, and even then, all they will know is they have a mysterious way of getting around, nothing more. They can't know something they have no idea of. MC can even dig all the way under their own living space without the need to go through the gates. Go see the orc battle again if you need to. Unless they specifically know what to look for and specifically gather men to dig at the specific spot, they're not going to find anything.

It's also not a month but week.

What I was mainly implying with my comment was that the "magical" power statement doesn't make sense. The inset pictures, describes the magnitude of what he can achieve, but not how others can't do it. The only thing that he has over standard people with skills, is speed and scale(where that magic power comes into play, but isn't a deal breaker). Nothing he has done is impossible for other people to replicate. It's not like Miyabi has ever said, the design of anything was going to be secret. The design of the "Mole Express" isn't highly technical. It was probably made in conjunction with the Apprentice blacksmiths (Again, he is an architecture buff and doesn't have a recipe for any of the pieces). The only weird thing is the Wind Enchantment Engine Block. Probably made with Iron or some other metal/metal alloy. The manga implies enchantment is a rare skill but not impossible to source. Karon(Karen)/Crafters/possibly other magic users, can probably enchant just not with the speed and/or accuracy that Miyabi is capable of. (Ch14 pg18). Again, he can leave an Enchant Diagram for the specific enchantment design. He obviously isn't going to the Duke's House every day to redraw the enchantments on the Hot/Cold Water Blocks. They're just charged by his servants.

And Again this is a prototype. The Engine Block can and probably should be broken up into less technical pieces for easier/Non-Miyabi construction/maintenance. Just based on the crude explanation, you could probably cut the number of "engine blocks" by half, and just make a Wind Direction changer/Engine Block rotator instead and just have 1 block. (Pointing Back, Front, or Neutral[pointed orthogonal to the directions of movement, or even just blocking the hole.]) In terms of charging the blocks, you would want multiple people to charge it, instead of just 1 Miyabi. Or, have multiple Engine block segments that would be less powerful individually and thus be charged separately by multiple people.
Remember that Karon was the strongest crafter, and his big thing is being able to hold a few lunches worth of material in his storage space, and is barely able to while expending all his effort and focus and magic power, barely able to create something half-formed. Miyabi is way, way, way, WAY more powerful on the scale of crafters than you give him credit for. For example, those water/heating blocks are made to last for 50 years; this isn't something they can just "recharge" either. That isn't something anyone can do. Same goes for the Wind Enchantment Engine Block; the sheer output as well as duration and durability are all things that are just not possible for non-Miyabi, at this point in time. The prototype has proven that it can do what was originally set out to do, but the Duke needs a way to be able to continue it sans Miyabi.

And currently, the planned train is mostly for Cargo, not passengers. So probably at most dozens of casualties. Hundreds, is probably a significant portion of the population of these cities. And they would not be riding these trains all that often. Only Miyabi is thinking that it could be a Commuter Train. Primarily, it would be merchants traveling with their cargo to market.
Mostly nobles, most likely, with a few of the richer merchants. This is going to be for high value cargo almost exclusively, considering that it's a one trip/day rate at most, and all mass aboard the train will affect its acceleration and stopping ability.

i feel like people instantly forgot this little nugget of "oh shit" vis a vis the design of the train:
image.png

Miyabi has to re-up the enchantment EVERY SINGLE DAY OF OPERATION FOREVER (I'm assuming it's like gassing up a car where the effects of the enchantment are already set in literal stone and you just need to give it more magic once it runs out)

so yeah, don't act too surprised when trent is like "yeah no sorry we're gonna need more people than just you running this thing" when they're talking about making this a part of the duchy's economy. with the trip to the capital taking twelve hours in one direction, that 24 hr enchantment is enough for exactly one round trip. he's gotta juice it every. single. trip. and literally nobody has the raw quantity of magic he does, so ostensibly you could get it done if you had about fifty talented production workers getting juiced like key limes, but that's not sustainable

With how high profile they are, there are definitely people keeping tabs on them. Looking back at the chapter they first thought up the tunnel, the Duke's daughter is already informed of the plan right away by Mel, so cat's out of the bag, there's no way they would have been able to keep it a secret from the Duke anyway.

Yeah it's not a month, I misremembered, but it's more than a week. Their trip to the capital took 15 days, but they were stuck in the rain on at least day 2 and day 6, so 2 days rain delay shown, up to 4 days if days 4 and 5 were also rained out. Their trip without rain delay would have been 11 days assuming all 4 days were rained out. Round trip based on that estimate would be 22 days, so they would be expected to be gone for 3 weeks minimum just traveling without weather delays.

If I may point out to anyone saying "just make a car" that Miyabi was stymied by a basic braking mechanism; do you really believe he's capable of producing a suspension system that will accomodate the forces an off-road vehicle capable of traveling faster than a horse-drawn carriage would be subject to? I don't.

All the jokers in the comments throwing snark at people unhappy with the duke and calling them dumb, get off your high horses lmao. Duke may have valid concerns but there's no doubt that he is being an asshole throughout the manga. Being right and being an asshole isn't mutually exclusive. If an outlier like Miyabi appears anywhere in real life, he will be sought after. People may not be subservient to him but they should at least treat him as an equal, a person of respect. The only reason the manga is the way it is is because MC values the relationship he made in the country and at the same time lacks a backbone. Someone with abit more pride would have offered his services to a different country.

Hurrah, the good version is here.

Good luck Karen~
She'll soon prove herself Miyabi's genuine number 1 apprentice and open up a career path for Crafters everywhere! I hope she becomes a veritable monster in good time. Maybe the prince can get somewhere with it too once he arrives.

And once again, Miyabi struggles to properly envision the full scope of his lofty goals. The duke has a point too. Always gotta look at the big picture in his position. Though in the same vein, I feel like Miyabi should get to add an additional request since this extra condition is essentially a new contract and an opportunity to renegotiate.
Not to mention, while this isn't something Miyabi would care about, he's essentially holding a major trade secret so giving it away freely with nothing to gain doesn't feel too smart. Starting up a sponsored Crafting School would be nice though...

I...did not realize his blocks were also supercharged in that trademark Miyabi way. Good to hear that they aren't actually infinite though.

It's satisfying to Common Sense Break the two harshly strict merchants. Mel is adorable as always~

That is a little more than a week, after being stuck in heavy rain, snow, road blocks, escorting a slow noble carriage. It's not far fetch to assume if they traveled themselves and without the weather issues, it'll be less than a week one way, maybe even half a week and a week back and forth.

Couple the independent and faster traveling time above and without knowledge of a hidden tunnel and high speed transport and constant surveillance, no one will realistically find out.

Yeah that makes sense. Something is only useful if everyone can make use of it and that doesn’t require 1 specific person in the whole world to operate and maintain it.

I get his point, it does make sense, but he's asking for something much further than the miracle that the MC had already presented. Like they're asking for Miyabi and the team to create the perfected version than letting them reiterate over the current one and make it better.
They better pay him half of the nation's budget after this and for him to move somewhere else. The nobles are quite overbearing and infuriating.
Yeah. In truth, the prototype should have been more like the first steam locomotive. Pretty much open wagons drawn by an engine that scattered cinders on the seated officials and choked the onlookers with smoke. And the noise! Having a fully enclosed locomotive is really a bit much.

Unfortunately, it seems to be designed to be propelled by jet power, which is a bad idea. Wind magic, if used, would be better employed to create internal pressure that would drive pistons or a turbine to create torque.

Overpowered cheat skills limitation. I can just see a solution that goes like this:

"Greetings, oh heroes summoned from Another World! I am the Princess of this kingdom! Will you please help us in this time of crisis by using your great powers to drive our subway system?"

No matter how the duke justify it, that's still scummy move. For one he altered an already agreed upon contract, what's the point of the train railway if it'll take a long ass time to build. Miyabi's reason to even to do that is to travel as soon and often as possible, now that wouldn't happen if you prevent him from helping with construction wouldn't it.

The decisions made on how the prototype was built was with the short deadline in mind, no shit you're gonna use everything in your disposal to secure what you want. The duke's concerns were perfectly valid. Its just unreasonable. Miyabi made a revolutionary invention to them and just the prototype itself would bring immense profit. So what if the prototype needs to be remade in 10 years, his reason to build the railway was he wanted to stay there for a long time in the first place.

The duke talks about long term problems but that will only happen if the tech for railway stagnates, you cant expect a prototype to be perfect. If miyabi had enough time and help then maybe he wouldn't have resorted to brute forcing things now would he. There's no need for him to be taken of the construction

These ppl seems to know only city cars, as if off road vehicles are foreign to them...
Being able to travel at 3, 4 or even 5 times the velocity of the existing transportation, allows ppl to modify routes of travel, including safer routes that would take longer time, using the existing methods of transportation.
And the permission only comes into play because is a train.
And people forget that, MC wants to travel 600 km straight line route in under 12 hours.

There is no way a 600 km long road in a straight line could be created which is safe and stable and allow a speed of 50 kmph or higher.

Normal off-road vehicles in most cases can't easily travel higher than 20 kmph, while MC is trying to achieve a travel speed of 50 kmph.

And on road you have to take detours depending on the route, so that shortest 600 km distance becomes more longer.

Also, in our history, trains came first before cars, because the level of engineering is different for a car compared to a train.

Someone with abit more pride would have offered his services to a different country.
And how would that help MC achieve his goals?

MC wants to create the travel system for Liz, so that she could work in Angelum as an Adventurer and do her Scholarship work at the Capital's Academy. And based on the talk so far, you can't change your adventure work location after registration.

If MC showcased his pride, not only he won't be able to work in the Kingdom, but would also destroy Liz's future along with it.

I guess current generation of people just don't know the concept of Compromise, even against unreasonable demands, as it is always needed to achieve the end goal.

Did you missed the part where I said the manga is the way it is because he values his relationships with the people in the country? Current generation snob my ass, learn to read.

First of all, the duke might be an "asshole" in our modern world standard, buuut the setting here is medieval feudalism. He is someone holding authority, which the MC and his group of merry men have no realistic chance to go against. The duke even listening to the MC at all shows that he respect his skill/character.

Second of all, have you seen how the duke did a total background check on the MC after realizing what he could do? If there even was a chance that the MC could, like you said, offering his services to different (potentially rival) countries? Whoops, straight to prison he goes. Letting such potential threat run free just because he seems harmless is pretty reasonable of the duke already. Any other shadier and/or "asshole" nobles would have forcibly made the MC work for them, maybe without payment even. Again, dude showed no ability so far that he could even resist local authority. No justice for the weak, even more so in feudal time.

Lastly, for all the "asshole" talk, old duke never did the MC any harm. Worst case, he just won't get his permission to alter local infrastructure for his selfish wish. It's not the end of the world.

does it make a choo-choo noise
Probably not, considering the "front of the train" (where a regular steam locomotive would have the boiler and such) appears to be purely ornamental - the propulsion being achieved by wind blowing out of the machine's rear.
