Yeah, they don't have his grasp of exactly what makes those abilities grow. And it's one of those cases where characters have to step out of their normal comfort zone enough to not make them seem dumb for not realising it.

A classic in manga, every one has the potential to be very powerful at the thing thought to be weak but doing so may get you killed by any number of like 90% of things that exist because reasons. As if there are no safe ways to practice that kind of thing, no it can only be thru dangerous methods which means that said newbie will most likely die and so NOBODY ever tries meaning everyone feels justified in their prejudices.
