It'd have been more sensible if his parents were powerful people, perhaps even abusive towards him, but it's gone in the dumbest and honestly funniest direction possible

If Okaya's parents were abusive that would make him sympathetic to a degree. It would be arguably dumber to have someone who's been portrayed as unapologetically evil since ch 1 as sympathetic in any way.

The only manga I've done this for, and I know I can find some decent critiques, is Aitsu no Kanojo.

It's not that Japanese people are not critical, it's that official platforms are much more heavily moderated and being openly critical usually makes you stick out in a negative way.

Remember there's a way higher likelihood that the author and other staff will read your comments on those apps, so openly insulting them is not a good look, even if you didn't like the story. Also your comment might get deleted if it's deemed inappropriate.

You can even see in series that get very controversial sometimes there are folks in the comments asking not to get too violent with the author and keep the peace. It's a very cultural thing.

But that's also why, when you do see people actually being openly critical, you know the story is turning to shit.
