Ruby started this story going well out of her way to be abusive towards Lloyd, ruining his reputation and constantly verbally abusing him. The synopsis of the story makes it clear that Lloyd being treated like that is meant to seem harsh and cruel.

Ruby hasn't really shown any form of remorse for how she treated Lloyd, doubling down on it constantly, attacking someone when they tried to explain the reality of how difficult the tasks Lloyd was accomplishing were, and purposely absorbing power to get the opportunity to threaten the lives of people so Lloyd would be in the abusive situation he started in.

To say people shouldn't be dropping this just because they don't want a redemption arc is, well, it's missing the point. With the ruby the manga has shown so far, this would not be a redemption arc. This would just be enabling terrible behavior.

A redemption arc needs to show at bare minimum that the "redeemed" person acknowledged what they did wrong and wants to be better. She had the opportunity to apologize to Lloyd. She was near him. But Ruby not only didnt do that, she actively got more antagonistic. She threatened to kill people with demonic, supernatural power to try and get everything back the way it was before. Ruby doesn't want redemption. The manga has made that very clear.

Lloyd only wants her redemption out of his own nostalgia for how things used to be. That's a very dangerous path to walk down. Many of us have had situations where we extended an olive branch to someone who hurt us, only to discover that it was taken as a sign by their abuser that they could continue to hurt them, and never have to worry about consequences because they'd be forgiven.

Now, to be fair to the author, this is an adaptation. Its possible they cut out the parts that showed ruby having remorse. And also whatever would make introducing a newer, even bigger threat before that's resolved do anything but suck any enthusiasm I had left out of me.

Anyway, I think I'm gonna go ahead and drop this.

Thank you for the translation.

You know, by completely ignoring the points I'm making and boiling it down to different opinions you're kinda proving my point :v

Especially since I'm pretty clearly talking about a specific type of comments that think a protagonist should be a murderous sociopath, that sad backstories = excuse bad actions or that if a character was a bad person they deserve death and have no chance of redemption
I didn’t ignore anything, you clearly said that people that « lack empathy » towards ruby are weeb, maybe you should read your own comment again.

That "Dragon" art in the last page looks like the "Red Dragon" art from that Hannibal Lector book/movie.

Ok I love that they used the painting The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed with the Sun for the final image. William Blake's painting was astounding to see in person.

No, I made two points

1 - that it's most likely poorly adapted as it's the case for a lot of mangas that the original story

2 - that some readers are as I described

A lot of the complaints about Ruby are fair because the manga pretty clearly did a poor job at making us sympathize with Ruby, but some of the comments are definitely from the people I described

I'll assume this is a misunderstanding and you felt personally called for what I said, for which I apologize since I didn't even have your comment in mind when I posted before, you even made valid point :v

Neat, that last panel is based on The Great Red Dragon by William Blake.

Well, what if her redemption arc included feeling remorse? Right now, both she and Lloyd feels they're the ones who's right without even trying to see where the other person is coming from. Lloyd has his own faults in this situation and, while they're not as bad as Ruby's, he still should take accountability for not talking with her about how she was treating him and running away instead. He had plenty of opportunities to open up to her about his treatment and refused to do so, and while she absolutely should have realized what a jerk she was being she also didn't want to lose her best and only friend and wanted them to live better than when they were orphans.

You actually see this a lot in parents who were raised poor focusing solely on the money and not on their child's emotional happiness, a cheap meal of butter rice/noodles may be nd Ruby did the childhood friend equivalent.
First of all, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Second, she was abusing him. It takes a tremendous amount of effort to stand up to your abuser, and it starts with recognising abuse in the first place. You can't blame a victim of abuse for not speaking out to their abuser about how they're being abused, because that's not the power dynamic. Ruby ingrained into him that he's worthless and she's the only one for whom he can be useful.

I would definitely have mixed feelings if I learned that my father was about to die, but he still left lifelong scars on my mental state that took me decades to even recognise. The damage he inflicted is easy to minimise in part because I've never really known life without it; if you've always been degraded as a person, it's just the norm, not a sign of horrible abuse that it is. In other words, it's okay for Lloyd to feel conflicted but I don't think it justifies redemption for Ruby.

According to weebs if you're bad you don't deserve empathy or second chance even if you actually had a life shitty enough to justify it
According to basic knowledge, comics are fiction and people read them for satisfaction, not for 100% irl accuracy.

This dude turning on the rose colored glasses to all the shit she has said to him. Absolutely delusional.

I swear this was getting so good with him getting over the trauma and now they just HAVE to bring her back for him huh. Goddamn it

I am on boat to against Ruby getting redemption, but if she gonna has any just like the author probably gonna give it, i want Ruby to be reduced like black mist in bottle like in Fullmetal or Greed toad form. In a pity state for eternity.

You don't have basic knowledge since:

1 - it's fiction? You don't say!

2 - satisfaction is relative, some would have satisfactory in Ruby dying, getting beaten and so on, some would find satisfaction in her getting redemption, which I'm pretty is sure how novel want

3 - actually quite a lot of people want stories to be more accurate to how things go in real life
Actually kinda funny you say that over Ruby situation when in general one of the biggest complaints you can see about some mangas is exactly about how spineless goody two shoes kind protagonists that forgive everything and anything are fucking unrealistic and more often than not flies in the face ot reality
Really, some are more forgiving than fucking Jesus
This manga barely had irl accuracy to begin with due to many things that happened without Ruby involvement, trying to use that against Ruby is honestly kinda funny

I forgot why I stopped reading this one... then, I read a chapter and remembered. They made this story too much about his and Ruby's relationship instead of him starting over fresh somewhere. And, the big thing, they throw way too many subplots at ya at once making the whole thing overly dramatic... like now, for instance. An Izekiel, a Ruby, and a dragon? Ffs😮‍💨... pick a subplot, finish with said subplot, move to the next one. That's how you create a legible story. Throw everything including the kitchen sink at the reader all at once? Bruh... just, no😑.

So not going to talk about the deranged hero casually disembowelling herself on meeting everyone else
I really like her. I mean, think about our "normal" greetings. Handshake or high-five? Spreads germs. Bowing or waving? Too distant. Disemboweling? Now that shows dedication.
