Rio is grasping a bit, and presumably we're getting a bombshell next chapter, but right now Mahoro isn't in the position of strength.

And the whole ugly personality like your face comment by Rei being treated like 'Wow that's the worst thing anybody has said tonight' just seems absurd compared to what you literally just learned.

The friends are flabergasted by it because this is such a petty and immature thing to say, it's not an evidence for or against him cheating with Rio so it doesn't do anything for his case, it is just a straight up insult. They didn't say verbatim it was 'the worst thing anybody has said tonight', but even if they have, there are different ways and aspects that can make something 'the worst', like it isn't a marriage-runining thing unlike the rest of what was said that night, but it is probably the most asshole or the most cringeworthy thing that somebody had uttered in then

You're getting the wrong reading from this.
I covered this a bit earlier when Kyouko got her initial dissing but in Japanese society you don't insult people like that, period. Well, to their faces. You say that sort of thing (and worse) behind their backs - like a civilized person.

Social interactions should be about avoiding conflict and increasing conformity. Anything you don't like should get a mild "is that so?".
Randos 1 & 2 are flabbergasted because going at someone like that in their presence is a huge faux pax. The closest I can come in analogy for a western person would be if Rei walked over and full-force pimphand backhanded her upside the face. Its something you just don't do.

Its kinda weird for the author to say Rio is starting to be incoherent here, if anything the burden of proof still lies on Mahoro and gang, and Rio has brought up various counterpoints on to why they would be prejudiced and are trying to frame Rei.

It basically goes to show this that this whole situation despite set-up as an expose affair party, was a very emotionally charged slapped together plan. If anything we are just waiting for Rio's husband to weigh in and perhaps speak up about this as his wife is the one being accused, but who knows what his intentions are.

Rei seems done for the day. His friends are seeing all this and will reflect Rei’s post-affair social reputation to outsiders, his prized audience.

I’m not really expecting Rio’s husband to have solid evidence to save the day, but I think that one of Rio/Rei’s slipups during the party will be the last piece of the evidence puzzle that he’s been quietly putting together for a while.

I think you are 100% misreading what most people are saying here.

We know she's a snake, but what we are saying that Rio has a point that most of Mahoro's evidence is flimsy and wouldn't hold up in a court of law as actual evidence.

If anything the next few chapters the author is going to acknowledge this fact even more if Rio's husband or Momoka's brother come in to save the day with actual concrete evidence of them cheating.

So instead of assuming we're all:

slobbin' on her bullshit like it's candy
