I'm a bit confused.

Rei is actually sad about divorcing? I really thought he was meh about his marriage.
A big part of this is cultural.

He got married to fulfill societal expectations (particularly his mom's), so losing that marriages means his good husband facade is ruined. Divorce is still a social taboo in East Asia. He will be seen as a failure of a husband by his peers.

Mahoro will suffer for it as well, probably more than him since she's a woman and as we all know, women are the ones responsible for keeping the marriage together (/s).

Another reason is financial. Mahoro will receive alimony from him because of the infidelity.

The rest is what other people have said, he doesn't want to lose his toy and cushy life. I guarantee you he was hoping she would stay so he could later manipulate her into going back to her passive attitude.

Guess I'm putting all my faith in Rei to do something stupid in the last couple chapters. Like, c'mon man, you're probably only the third shittiest person in this whole affair at the moment, are you really going to let it end without even trying to retake the top spot? Go for the gold, bud; I believe in you.

Actually, to me he isn't even reaching the podium of the shittiest person.
Yeah, that sound incredible after all he did, he really tried it hard, asshole, trash, jerk, all those words fit to him. But the level was so high he couldn't even reach it.
Itsuki and Rio are a trainwreck, while he just can't beat his mother who simply made what he is.

I've almost been in Rei's shoes when it came to losing my wife to a divorce (no cheating involved). And believe me, once the anger left, despite all her faults, it hurt a lot. It probably would have faded over time if we decided to do it but during that time, I lost my sleep, self-esteem, focus and hope for a nice family life.

You can't build something with someone significant and destroy it without feeling anything, unless you're a sociopath. Glad that he realized Mahoro's true value once he lost her. We always take our spouse for granted until it's too late.

I DON'T WANT PEACE. I WANT PROBLEMS, ALWAYS.
Peace was never an option.
Stop trying to make it an option.

Truck-kun, there's a MIL that just left the house. Do you see your target?
Bruh, what is it with you people and hating the residents of the Isekai world? Why would you want to shove MiL on them? What did these people do to you?

Hopefully with only 2 chapters left this means no Haruto romance for the author to project herself onto
pls dm me your copium dealers info. I want whatever it is they have you on.

Am I coping? I mean what romance can there be in 2 chapters other than a line of text that they're dating or something. I'm hoping we get more about Mahoro's divorce in the next 2 chapters rather than Haruto romance but maybe that's naive.

Well at least Haruto isn't sticking around for the next bit. Looking forward to the twist where he never existed and was Mahoro's fantasy all along. (jk)

It's a taboo everywhere to some degree. You're supposed to marry once, save maybe if your partner died thru no fault of your own. Anything else is A Bad Sign, something went unfixably wrong with what was supposed to be a life commitment. The alternative to having a cultural stigma is to have legal barriers like banning no-fault divorce, which seems worse.

It is true that sometimes the divorcee stigma is unfair to one of the former spouses. Maybe it was an unwise choice of spouse, or a spouse they were coerced into having. But it's often unreasonable for everyone to know the details, so they just stay wary.

Mahoro shows that she doesn’t need anyone to speak for her or to back her up when she declares that she is leaving the house and divorcing Rei.

Her little shaky bubble when she told him it was for both their sakes was tough, but she was able to firmly tell him that they can’t be together.

She doesn’t ask Rei any further questions. She doesn’t need him.

I hope he didn’t stand back up after that. Just crawl out the door, Rei. It’s done.

He's upset that he got caught. That's what makes it so gross. Its like someone taking away a toy you don't even want to play with anymore. You're mad not because you care but because someone would dare do that but that toy is another fully grown person. He's upset because it will make him look bad in the future and if he gets married without telling others and tries this again, it will be easier for that future person to divorce him too.
I also think there's an aspect of him seeming fairly useless without her. He doesn't seem to have any homemaking skills, as he relied on Mahoro to do all the cooking and cleaning. I'm willing to bet he never learned how to do it at home either, as his mother spoiled him rotten. So from his point of view, not only was he caught, he's losing his cushy lifestyle.
